I think I've found him in 1871:

Name: John Smith
Age: 18
Estimated birth year: abt 1853
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Bromley, Middlesex, England

Civil parish: Poplar
Ecclesiastical parish: St Stephen
County/Island: London
Country: England

Street address: 5 Paris Terrace

Occupation: boiler maker

Registration district: Poplar
Sub-registration district: Poplar
ED, institution, or vessel: 12
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 322
Household Members: Name Age
James Chadwick 45
Elizabeth Graham 35
Elizabeth Graham 7
Caroline Jefferson 26
Henry Jefferson 1 4 months
Kate Jefferson 19
Rebbecca Jefferson 62
Rebecca Jefferson 22
Rebecca Jefferson 6
William Jefferson 40
William Jefferson 31

Mary Smith 50 - lodger, married, laundress, Swanwick, Derbyshire

As the relationship for both is lodger, we can't be sure they're related to each other.

Have the marriage cert for John and Lydia!!!

John's father is named as George Frost Smith (I cannot make out a hyphen in there if there is one)

Both John and George's professions are stated as boiler makers.

It's hard for me to make out the information on this cert, but under residence at time of marriage it looks like Bromley, and neither had been married before which is a huge relief.

So now I am looking for them John in 1871 census and backward... can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

I've finally bitten the bullet and ordered the marriage cert for John and Lydia!

I cannot bare the tension no more from these pair, I have got to find out where the name starts/finishes.

Thank you all kindly for your help, will let you know what I get from the cert when it arrives.

Was just looking at that death you found for John, and I don't think it's him, as Ancestry have this.
John Frost Smith
Born:abt 1875
Died:1883 Jan-Feb-Mar
St Olave Southwark (1837-1901) London, Surrey

This John Frost Smith was 8 years old. I thought it might be a connection.

Sheena Report 18 Oct 2007 23:22

Are you sure about the death of John?

William was born in 1886, and John died in 1883?

Not sure on that one?

Was gonna suggest that William may have been a Grandson, but it says son on census.

The mind boggles some more

Yes - about lunatic. But doesn't necessarily mean she was mad. People were put into lunatic asylums for all kinds of reasons, such as alcoholism or women going through hormonal imbalance during menopause.

I think you might be onto something there!
Sounds like her, wonder where I might get hold of them records?

I am right in thinking that it specifies her as a Lunatic aren't I?

I would love to yes, but when he married in 1918 which I know is a long way off 1901 he's marriage cert states he was a labourer.

Could it be him? Why in Gloustershire?

Born in Poplar, married in Northfleet, Kent.
What a puzzle this man is???

Sheena Report 18 Oct 2007 22:29

No, kinda short on funds at the mo, so trying to make use out of Ancestry as much as I can before I have to cut that off too!

But getting nowhere fast! It's getting the point that I am having to order every single cert for this side of the family.

I had to order my grandfather's cert to get he's father Alfred. Then ordered Alfred's to get he's parent's!
If my granddad was alive today he would be kicking me something rotten for my indepth search on he's family! Bless him.

The cert says:
Father: John Frost-Smith
Mother: Lydia Frost-Smith formerly Cevil
Occupation: Boiler Maker
Born: 12 Johnsons Terrace, Poplar on 23 Sept 1879
