Just to explain it all the way -- until 1911, the names of brides and grooms weren't connected when they were entered in the index.

Each page usually has four names -- two brides, two grooms. If you know which ones you're looking for, you ignore the other two. That's your case here.

If you only know one name, then the only way to be sure which person that person married is to order the certificate in the name you do know. You can be pretty certain, though, if you can find that person in the next census or two and deduce from the spouse's name which one s/he is in the marriage record.

What the marriage certificate will get you is Bertha's father's name.

There's someone here (a distant cousin of my own -- we share English ancestors, with my branch having come to Canada, and he also has French ancestors) who might be able to give you a few pointers on French genealogy for Anglos. I'll send you a message to tell you how to get in touch.

Hi, new to all this family tree business! very excited to have found a cousin in Canada I didnt know I had! One name that has me stumped is my Great Gran, Bertha Ballon, I know she was born in Paris in c1850 and she married James Webb and they had Annie, Arthur, Eleanor, Wolf and Florence here in the UK. Any tips on tracking french rellies. Would appreciate the help, Regards, Vicky
