Does anyone pay a monthly subscription to Ancestry? Just wanted to know how it works.
Thanks.

I don't have monthly membership but I did have quarterly and the payment was taken from a credit card. I was always advised by email just before it was due. I have just updated to Annual membership and there was the option to pay by credit or debit care so I opted for debit card. I would guess monthly is done the same way.

Annual works out quite a bit cheaper but is a lot to pay at once!

Hope this helps.

Brian, have you had the three day free trial - no card needed yet??

Me!
I took a 14 day free which meant giving my card details. Once it had expired I kept Ancestry on monthly.
I don't do anything, it just comes out of my bank each month via my card.

Brian,

The census records are pretty comprehensive, so once you join you'll be able to search every decade for your relatives alive in the census period, giving you a lot more information about where they lived and what they did.

You'll also have access to the WW1 military records which are interesting if you have people who served.

Is there anything about the availability of information you wanted to clarify before you commit?

Hi Brian,

I did take just one month subscrition a while ago. I contacted them by telephone and said I just wanted the one month only, checked this because I didn't want them to just carry on month after month deducting the charge from my debit card. They sent me an e-mail just before the month was up to confirm the end date. Everything was ok just make sure if you only want one month or 3 months whatever it is you keep their e-mail to prove it.

Hi Tracy,

Can You stop it at anytime?

John

I periodically subscribe monthly and can cancel at any time. Once I have the info I'm after and nothing else has come to light then I cancel for a few months.

Hi

I looked at Ancesstry when I first started looking at my family tree, but decided it was too expensive!
I then paid to view on other sites and soon found I had run up a bill of £150!!!! Have now taken out a annual subscription and have already used up what I would have paid on pay to view in just two months.
Site takes time to get used to as there is so much information. Building family tree helps track down where to look next. Regards Linda

I used to have an monthly subscription which was £10 and as others have said stop now and again when research got a bit like going round in circles, so I would have a break!

Then last month I noticed that Ancestry was offering 10% off annual subscription if you worked for NHS.So annually I pay £71 instead of £120.

I contacted Ancestry who were very helpful, swapped me over there and then and because of the way the month had landed when I called them I got 13 months instead of 12.

Hope this helps for any NHS staff at least!!! Might be worth callling them and asking if they offer any discount to other staff groups.

I have found the tree much better on Ancestry than that of Genes in a lot of ways. They search all the censuses immediately you put a name on your tree which you can attach to your person. This saves trawling through the census names on offer to find your particular one, which can be very time consuming.

This also includes Ancestry World which with one cllick I had names on my tree going back to 1620! Brilliant.

For me it has been well worth it. Hope this helps

Karen
