Can anyone tell me how and were to find information on people who were in workhouses in Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead.
Will there be any records to say if and when they left the workhouses and went to other families. Did they go as workers or adopted into the families.

Hello John

There is a website : www.workhouses.org.uk You may find some information there and if you know some names you can search the census 1841-1901
Hope this helps
good luck Denise

The work house records usually belonged to the master at the time. when one left and another one came, the previous records were often destroyed. If you are lucky and they were kept, they will be in the records office for the area. Even if they survive, you would normally only find an entry on a list giving date of admission and date of discharge. If they died, it may give the cemetery they were buried in.

Tyne and Wear Archives may help. There aren't records for inmates of Gateshead Workhouse though - as far as I've established. I don't know about Newcastle . Deborah
