Margaret, thanks for the lookups, but neither of those would be right for a 24yo Samuel marrying in 1876. It is appreciated though.

Helen,

Samuel married Maria Cameron on 5/9/1876 in Victoria (I can't read the place). I know he had a daughter, Criss born in 1886, the 4th of 7 children, although I don't have details of the other children. (Criss is my husband's grandmother).

I was interested to find out about his ancestry, and the reason for his family to emigrate to Australia. His father William is listed as an Engineer on the marriage certificate.

Anything else you can suggest would be greatly appreciated.

regards

Pam

Hi Pamela,

So as not to double up, could you give me more details on Samuel Clark's marriage in 1876? and do you know if they had any children

bye Helen

Helen,

Yes I think the infant 1 year is Samuel as he was 24 on his marriage certificate in Sept 1876, parents Maria and William.

Is there any more I can get? I am in England, but I have contacts on holiday in Melbourne at the moment.

Hi Pamela,

I had a quick look and found ( - ) mark in age column alongside a Captain and a Mr & Mrs, So to answer your question, I dont think it means infant :-)

Is this the possible family your are referring to on the Edmond?

CLARK M MRS - MAR 1853 EDMOND
CLARK WM - MAR 1853 EDMOND
CLARK INFANT WITH I yr MAR 1853 EDMOND

Helen,

I've found the Bridges family... well Mother and 3 daughters, but no husband. I know he emigrated too as he was a witness on his daughter's marriage certificate.

The mother and 3 daughters were on the assisted emigration list, I checked the unassisted for James too, but no luck.

any other ideas?

Their record was
BRIDGES ANN 41 JAN 1857 APPLETON 11 305
BRIDGES ANNE 16 JAN 1857 APPLETON 11 307
BRIDGES ELIZABETH 16 JAN 1857 APPLETON 11 307
BRIDGES MARY 14 JAN 1857 APPLETON 11 307

(this matches the names on the 1851 census, except the girls were then 7, 9, 11... was there a reason they might have claimed to be 16?)

Helen...

Ok.. I've found a possible, the ship Edmond in March 1853.

If there is a - by the age does this just mean age not known, or does it mean an infant under one year, do you know?

I have 2 families who appear to have emigrated to Australia, from what I can see on the google results for passenger lists it would appear that not many exist for pre 1889.

Can anyone advise me where I can look, or what I can find on the following?

I have Samuel Clark, born c1852 in Manchester, had emigrated by 1876, and it seems his parents William Clark and Maria Clark nee Shaw emigrated too, as Maria was a witness at his Australian wedding in 1876. (Victoria)

I also James Hamilton born 1834, Ireland, married in Australia 1859 to Annie Bridges born 1842 in Helston Cornwall.

James' parents were James and Mary Hamilton, Annie's parents were James and Ann Bridges.

Any info gratefully received.
