My grand mother had a fling during the late 1930's, and my mum was the result. They split up when she was 4 years old and her dad had to pay maintainence money to my nan, he disappeared not to be heard of since. My mum had to collect this money from the court office when she was a little girl and she does know his name...this was during the 1940's, would there be records still?? can we have access to them??

thanks

In this country (and I assume in England) , Maintenance records are never destroyed.
You would have to apply in writing to the appropriate Court. Whether the Magistrate would agree to releasing any records is another matter.

Hi Derek,

Have you tried the local council as it may have been a social service case? They may still have a file.

Mick's right. Those maintenance records don't get destroyed and the magistrates court should have them or know where they are held.

I'd be ringing them again and asking to talk to the magistrate's clerk.

Hello

I havnt looked at the local council.
I have had a reply from the court and they said part of the archiving process, they would have been destroyed.

I'm afraid in my experience many of these records have been lost or destroyed over time. I know I found the ones I was looking for once had been destoyed. Derek have you checked all the court records have been destoyed in your case? I've heard that even when the court records have been destoyed, there are sometimes still 'registers' left which may hold some info.
