Don't forget that ancestry also has access to other than census records etc ......... like wills, war lists, phone books, pension records, family trees etc etc.

I couldn't manage without ancestry .............. and use find my past as a pay per view site.

I find FMP much less useful.

I rarely use ancestry for bmds from 1837 to about 1920/25 ...................... they are much better on freebmd. After all, ancestry downloads from freebmd so is always a few weeks behind!

I subscribe to both ancestry and find my past. On several occasions have found births/marriages or deaths listed on find my past but not on ancestry. Having said that find ancestry very good for census records. Hope this is of some help

Thanks Sue,
Good hints for me there!

Helen, yes was looking at Global, but thinking about it, the Uk one will probably do me.

Food for thought, thanks both!

Hi Mary,

I subscribe to both sites. I don't have world membership on Ancestry, so only pay around $230.00 per annum.

I'm really happy with both sites. Ancestry covers all the census records where as findmypast only has 41, 61, 71 (partial), 81 and 91. but it does have the added bonus of military records, overseas births etc......

Hi Mary

You say Ancestry charges $540 per year, are you looking to take out Global membership? Unless you need to have it, Ancestry Uk is more than enough, and at British Pound 79 approx = NZ$215.

HI Mary

I currently have subscriptions to both Ancestry and Findmypast. Depends on what you are looking for. I find Ancestry definately better for BMD's and census records. If you are looking for military and / or immigration then Findmypast.

Would suggest you try for a free-trial of ancestry and see what you think. Unfortuantely don't think findmypast offers free trial, with that is pay-as-you-go for trial.

Other factor is - the Ancestry $540/year gives you access to Ancestry World - records from UK/CDA/USA and Australia. While Findmypast is strictly UK.

Next hint - if you order thru Ancestry Aus annual membership showing as $449.95/yr AUD ($540NZD). While if you sign up thru Ancestry USA then annual membership is showing as $299.40USD with current conversion becomes roughly $390NZD

I'm in New Zealand and for Christmas I'm getting a subscription to one of the above.

Now, the fees!

Ancestry charges $540 per year.

FindMyPast charges $243 per year.

For those of you who have subs to these - it is really worth my while paying an extra $297 for Ancestry or is FindMyPast just as good?

I have read up on what I'd get for my money from each, but I'm interested in views from anyone who uses them already.

Thanks in advance!
Mary
