My Great Grandfather George(Edmund) Hassall.
Emigrated to New Zealand aged15? Born 1847
Married Annie Eliza Conley 1870 Died? Drowned? this part is unclear He disappeared presumed drowned in the Auckland Harbour Dec. 1874.Four months before my Gr Mother was born.
we think he had a brother Thomas D Hassell. We have a photo of him taken 21/09/1873 From the London School of Photography. 52 Cheapside.EC

I cannot find birth registrations for either George or Thomas, however registrations were not compulsory for births untlil 1875.

I have found what seems to be them on the following censuses.

I cannot find George on the 1861 Census, so he had presumably already left the UK for New Zealand.

I cannot find Thomas after the 1871 Census, nor can I find a death that is convincing! He may well have also emigrated.
