I was just wondering what information is actually in all the different directories such as Kellys and Whites?

I've seen alot for sale on discs but don't know whether there is anything of real use to me on them.

One contains all the following for a certain Suffolk village:

1674 Hearth Tax

1710 Poll Book

1790 Poll Book

1831 Topographical Dictionary

1839 Robsons Directory

1855 Whites Dierctory

1869 Post Office Directory

1873 Return of Owners

1891-2 Whites Directory

1892 Kellys Directory

1900 Kellys Directory

1912 Kellys Directory

1925 Kellys Directory

1937 Kellys Directory

Suffolk & UK Various Maps

So if my ancestor was a farmer living in this village in say 1893 would he be mentioned in any of the directories? or were only people living there the year the directory was published be mentioned? Also is it only the 'higher up' professional people, such as priests and policemen that get mentioned rather than the farmers?

Hopefully some one out there can fill me in abit :)

Thanks for that :) I'm struggling with it abit though. I can search the directories, it tells me theres 7 matches in a directory but then won't let me see the matches, only go through it page by page! Ah!
