I can't find a birth registration for my ggrandmother Jane Clark Stewart. She is listed on her wedding registration to Duncan McRae in 1875 in Edinburgh as Jane Clark Stewart. On the wedding registration is her age is listed as 26 years which puts her birth at 1849.

We know her mother was Mary Robertson and her father was Duncan Stewart a ships carpenter. He died at sea.

I have found a birth registration on Scotland People for a Jane Ramsay Stewart in 1849. Right parents. Duncan is listed as a ships carpenter and Mary Robertson which is also correct.

Am I correct in assuming they are the same person? Our family has always known of her as Jane Clark Stewart.

Any opinions on:

are they the same person?

do you think someone stuffed the birth registration up?

Thanks for your assistance. Walter

Hi

Yes. I have found Mary Stewart, Jane Stewart and John Stewart in the 1851 and 61 census. Both times in Perth. There appear to be only two children. Her name was just lsted as Jane. From the birth certificates and the census, I think we can safely confirm that she had a brother.

I think Mary was a widow by 1861 as she is running boarding houses in that census. In the 1851 census she is listed as wife of carpenter.

I can't find Mary or Jane in the 1871 census but let's face it there are lots of Mary and Jane Stewarts around. Jane got married in Edinburgh in 1875 and her mother is listed as deceased on the wedding certificate as is her father. My mum knew Duncan Stewart died at sea.

I can't find Mary's death certificate either but there a stacks of Mary's.

I came from Brisbane now live in Canberra.

Still the mystery of the Jane Clark and Jane Ramsay is a bit baffling.

Thanks for your help.

Walter
