No not unlikely at all. It has been going on for years. My great Aunt was unmarried and pregnant in 1916 aged 16 and had to give her son up for adoption and go to London so none of the family knew. I only found this out 2 years ago and most of my family did not know. So it is not unlikely at all. Very common in fact, just hushed up. So maybe that is what happened to her.

Just wondering if anybody knows of a John Finegan born in Jan/ Feb or March of 1950 in Scarborough North Yorkshire.
I am trying to see if he was the son of my late aunty. If he is around still known as Finegan then it is highly unlikely. It is just pure family curiosity. Whilst my aunty was dying he mentioned a baby boy and that it wasn't her fault. We took this as having a child that was given away.
On the birth records there is a John born in 1950 and the mothers maiden name was also Finegan which I think would be unlikely to have an unmarried mother in 1950.
