I am trying to find information on my grandfather Michael Murphy.
He married my grand mother Mary Catherine Sinnott (b.1908 in Liverpool) in 1939.
They had a daughter Mary Frances Murphy in June 1939 and that he died before 1954.
I have a couple of photos of him with my mother and she looks about 3 years old
I would be gratefull of any help as my mother has passed away and my father has no knowledge of the family before 1954
Thanks
Mike (Theresa's Husband)

Hi Mike -- not Theresa? ;)

The details of their marriage (I checked the image, since you had a year):

SINNOTT Mary C.
Liverpool S.
jan-mar 1939
vol 8b
page 312

If you order the certificate, you'll get their fathers' names.

I'd do that first and check their ages, because the GRO has Mary Catherine born 1903, Mary Catherine born 1906 and Mary born 1909. Then if you order a birth cert you'll have a father's name to compare it to.

Good luck!

Hi kathryn
Sorry to confuse you its my wife's computer.
Thanks for the advice.
I have a memorial card which says she was 68 when she died in 1976.
Her sister Johanna was born in 1900 in Ireland
perhaps Mary was too.
Thanks
Mike

Hi kathryn
Can you tell me if any of the Mary Catherine's were born in Ireland or Liverpool.
When my grandmother died I think my father guessed her age
Thanks
Mike

Unfortunately, the GRO is for English and Welsh events only, Mike.

So that lends support to the theory that she was born in Ireland -- if she doesn't seem to be in the GRO.

Here are the basic facts about the ones who are:

... hey, this is what you're supposed to do yourself!

Go practice:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

-- free, fast, no registration. Just click on the red "search", select "births", enter
surname: sinott
given name: mary
from 1905 to 1912, say

Actually, though I'm going to help you out this time. ;)

Ancestry does "fuzzy" searches better -- it uses the FreeBMD database, but it will more often find entries that are similar to what you're looking for. FreeBMD will do a phonetic search, but it comes up with all kinds of crap, undistinguished in terms of what's similar and what's not.

... Yeah, FreeBMD didn't find this one that Ancestry found me -- I'm wondering whether this might be your girl:

Name: Mary Catherine Sinnett
Year of Registration: 1905
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Toxteth Park
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 139

There could have been an error when the info was transferred into the index itself, back in 1905. Or whoever registered her might just not have been really clued in about spelling. ;)

But -- you go to FreeBMD and do the search for Mary Sinott anyway -- you'll see the other options, which might be her if the birthdate given at death was fuzzy.

I'll practice a little more.
Perhaps when I've been on here as long as you seem to have then I'll be as good as you are.
