Sorry to take so long in responding, I have had auditors at work so the thumb screw bruises and whiplash marks take quite a bit of soothing after work.

Gillam is an unusual spelling and appears in the family after about 1880, before that it was spelt Gilham and were in Kingsdown Road in the 1881 census. I have the Gillams/Gilhams back to 1841 through family knowledge and contacts on that side, but again, no-one can locate a marriage.

Before anyone asks, I have done countless phonetic or soundex searches and alternate spelling searches and still come up blank.

I believe it is Elizabeth's signature as witness on her sons marriage certificate in August 1919 and that she died somewhere in the mid 1920's. Even searching that late hasn't found a marriage.

But I still can't believe that a responsible parent in the mid-Victorian era would allow their 17yo daughter to "shack up" with a bloke just around the corner from your own home.

The search continues!!

Hi Colin,
hope i haven't built your hopes up as to looking for a marriage for your Richardson and Gillam as i thought i had access to the BMD's but it's only the one's that have already been transcribed on FreeBMD.
It may be possible that they never married, or that they married well after their children were born, it's not unheard of. The name Gillam is very unusual and there are not many about through the census nights certainly not in London anyway, if you think any of the above is any use please email me and i will have a look through the rest of the previous census nights for you..
Love Belle.

I did see an Elizabeth Gillam with a father Joseph but she seems to have been born around 1852
Let me know what you think...

The first child was George W (probably William).
My grandfather is the fourth child William Charles Richardson born 22 Oct 1892.

I now recall seeing elsewhere that the LMA is closed for refurbishment so I shall try an e-mail and see how I go.

Thanks for the help so far.

I have been struggling to find the marriage of my direct paternal great grandparents for nearly five years. I have quite a bit of information, but nothing leads to locating the marriage.

Frederick Richardson b1865 St Luke's, Clerkenwell or Islington. I have no definite idea about his parentage but my best guess (about 50% certain) is that he was living with is widowed mother Ellen at 16 Albert Place St Mary Islington in the 1881 Census. If his mother is Ellen, then his father would be John who was a tailor.

Elizabeth Gillam b1869 Islington. The spelling is from my grandfathers birth certificate. I am 95% certain that her father is Joseph Gillam who is a coke and coal dealer at 109 Kingsdown Road Upper Holloway Islington in the 1881 Census.

In the 1891 Census, Frederick and Elizabeth are shown as being married and living at 9 Blenheim Road Upper Holloway Islington and have three children, George age 4, Frederick age 2, and Charlotte aged 8mths. Given the age of the oldest child, Elizabeth would have been barely 18yo in 1887 when he was born. Any marriage of some-one at that age would have to have parental consent.

I have searched and searched freeBMD without success. No such marriage is indexed and a view of scanned pages covering Richardson and Gillam marriages for each quarter of 1886-1888 has failed to show their names too.

I feel that my only hope is that they had a church wedding and it somehow failed to get on the official registers. A registry office marriage would have been on the registers staight away.

Given their addresses in the 1881 and 1891 Census returns, and known family religious practices, I believe the two most likely churches are St Mark's Tollington Park and St Anne's Poole's Park.

I am very much hoping that some kind person may be able to look at the church records at London Metropolitan Archives. Living in Australia it's rather a long walk to get there myself.

By searching the LMA on-line catalogue I have been able to determine call numbers for the two churches. The call number for St Anne's Poole's Park marriages 1882-1889 is X096/252; and for St Mark's Tollington Park marriages 1880-1888 is X100/124 and 1888-1895 is X100/125.

Anyones help would be greatly appreciated.
