Find Ancestors

Hi can anyone help me please, I am totally confused by my great great grand mother, the only birth I can find is for a Caroline Gunson born in Ossett in 1841 and yet all the census records I have for her once she married my great great grandfather George Idle suggest that she was born in 1831, however the death I have found for her in 1894 states that she was 59, which has me totally confused. Any help would be gratefully received,

Hi Angela

On census records she does seem to be born before registration. Do you have her father's name from the marriage certificate?

I see the IGI has a christening for a Caroline Shaw Gunson in 1841 Ossett....do you have reason to believe her full name was Caroline Shaw Gunson. Also this is a christening/baptism NOT a birth record. You can be baptised when you are 63 it is not always an indication of when or where you were born.

She gives her place of birth as Thornhill on the 1891, (and 1881 and 1871) perhaps you could do with checking the parish records for the 1830's to see if she was baptised there.

I think this father William is a 'Surveyor of Highways' does that tie in with the marriage cert? .............don't think that is right looking at other census................

I sent for the marriage certifcate tonight Gail as I got fed up of looking, I even started looking at the Gunson male marriages to see if I could find one that would tie in. There are 2 Caroline Gunson marriages on freebmd, one in 1868 and then my great grandmothers marriage. But i have looked for a birth for a Caroline Gunson from 1831 onwards but I have not been able to find one in any of the parish records. I can only send for 2 certs each month and I definitly need this one. Once I have the certificate it will tell me more about her. The Idles are easy but their wifes drive me mad.
You are a fantastic help though Gail, I have found out so much about the Sharpes, Rutherfords and Sedgwicks since you gave me the help recently.

Thank you Gail it looks like the Caroline born in 1841 who I know was born in Ossett is not my great grandmother. I just can't find a birth for a Caroline Gunson born 1831ish esp in Thornhill. As she was older when she married my grandfather, I have to come to the conclusion that she had been married before, but sometime after the 1861 census, I have checked all the male Gunson marriages but nothing,
it is frustrating. However hopefully all will be cleared up once I get the marriage certificate.

Are you sure Gunson is her maiden name? She's old enough to have been married before.

hi Rose, no I am becoming more amd more convinced that Gunson was not her maiden name. I have sent for the marriage certificate as this should help me. I may have been down a blind alley for a while thinking that she was born Caroline Gunson.
I cannot find her in the 1861 census at all or the person I think she may have married first, Joseph Gunson, I have checked FreeBMD for all Gunson events and become even more confused, but hopefully I will be able to update you all as I get updated myself..

Hi Gail Rose, I got the marriage certificate, and Caroline is listed as a widow father's name George Drake, I have jsut got back from nice and have not had chance to check anything yet, I will now, but just thought you might like to know.

The 1861 census has a Caroline Gimson but the original looks like Gunson to me. She's the wife of Joseph, was born 1832, Dewsbury, Yorks. and is living in Whitfield, Glossop, Derbyshire. Hubby was born 1819 Dewsbury.

Hi Margaret, that is the census that I could not find...but the marriage seems to be to a Caroline Fox, unless you can see another one with a fresh pair of eyes.

The only marriage I can find is Caroline Fox who married Joseph Gunson 1852, Wakefield, but according to the 51 census she was born Thornhill.

I'm getting nowhere fast!
On the 41 census there's a Caroline Fox age 10 with Amelia Fox 12 living with Elizabeth Hale 65 in Thornhill.
The only Caroline Drake is only 4, father is William and they're in Barnsley, Yorks.

Caroline Fox says on two census returns that she is born in Thornhill, she has a Hall with her on 1841 and there is a George Drake who may have married a Sarah Fox who has a Hall with them......

I know I'm trying to make the facts fit......lol
