May be the guy in Hants who is a Strike is the husband. Someone reckoned it looked like Hazel, but that just isnt a name likely at that time.

Check images on previous page to Knel, second from the bottom is very similar. Ancestry has transcribed as Hoel, but I bet it's Noel

Okay, here's a possibility. (I'm hoping Laurel will excuse the shameless exploitation of her thread, now that I'm pretty sure she's decided she's not related to old Knel.)

I was just searching the censuses at Ancestry for people called "wrong dob", the name I add when, say, my grx3 grandparents' daughter is transcribed as being 45 yrs old when they're only 50 and 55 themselves. I discovered another member of the persnickety Kathryn / Katherine etc. species has been doing the same!

But I also found someone who might just be Knel's husband. His name -- and it apears in more than one census, although I haven't checked the images -- was ...

.
.
Wrong Shirt.

The scenarios that might have led to that will keep me entertained all night.

I think we probably have an employer doing the census reporting who was following one of the rules for ancestors and guessing at his employee's age, place of birth ... name ... Devon, Hampshire, it's all the same to him.

Quite possible the age was entered in the wrong column for sex, too. Without knowing the name, ya just can't guess!

And also possible that if she really was a woman, Strike was her married name and she was widowed or separated and her employer either didn't know or didn't care.

I thought striker but then if you look, he gives a flourish to the end of virtually every word on there - LOL.

Cant find a strike or striker born 1864 in Hampshire anyway. Found a bloke born 1850s in Hants - surely its not an early sex change. Thats the only one I could see.

Im off to bed now - nite nite

Please do, Heather! "Knel" looks to be about as good as anything else.

I looked at capital "R"s on the page, and they're written with a great flourish in front, so it isn't likely an R.

Knel, Kuel -- not. But what? I'm pretty good at this, and I don't have a clue. Try as I might, I can't read it as "Kate".

It's just possible the surname is Striker, but that doesn't seem to match up with Hampshire.

I suspect that now that Laurel knows Ms. Strike wasn't really an aunt, she's lost interest in her. ;)

But in the interests of posterity, to some of whom she may be a real aunt, we oughter get her straightened out!

Oh I have to look at that image! Mind you Im talking as someone who finally found their GGMx2 as "Mann" Cheal rather than Naomi.

many thanks for clearing that up for me kathryn,

I'd start by doubting that's her name. ;)

I can't tell what it might be from the image, but I still doubt that reading.

And of course you know that she wasn't really "aunt", as Ancestry has it, but "assistant"!

Here's someone of the same age and surname who once lived in Hampshire:

Name: Eliza Strike
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Devonport, Devon, England

Civil Parish: Ryde
Ecclesiastical parish: All Saints
Town: Ryde
County/Island: Hampshire
Country: England

But that's the best I can do, I'm afraid!

Does anyone have information on a Knel E Strike. According to the 1901 census she was born about 1864 in Hampshire, and at the time of the census was living in Streatham, London.
