And I'm in Canada, so I'm not much use!

You might be able to get a reference librarian at the local library to help you find a newspaper obituary, or maybe the newspaper itself will do archives searches. You'd have to google a bit to find the names of the newspapers, of course. ;)

Maybe if you post in the Records Office board you could get somebody local to give you some tips or help you out along that line. Just be sure to mention that you have the death certificate -- maybe reproduce the registration info from this thread.

Also, a search of the white pages on line

http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/search/residential/search.publisha

shows only 6 people with surname Care in the vicinity of West Bromwich -- do you know them or have you approached them?

Hi Yvonne -- this is likely the registration of his death:

Name: Thomas Care
Birth Date: 27 Jul 1920
Death Registration Month/Year: Apr 1995
Age at death (estimated): 74
Registration district: Sandwell
Inferred County: West Midlands
Register number: C46
Entry Number: 120

I'm not sure (being in Canada) what the death cert would tell you, but it might have something about a family member.

It would give you the exact date of death, and with that you could search newspaper archives at the local public library for an obituary that would very likely name his wife, children, grandchildren etc.
