Hi Ozi, I'm back again.
Thank you so very much for all your research.
I can now identify the men in uniform in my photo.
Charles Thomas Whittard Royal Engineers and his eldest son James Frederick Whittard Royal Artillery.
I have had the photo dated 1878 - 1880.
Thanks once again for all your input much appreciated.
Happy Christmas, Dawn

I have searched & searched for any of the younger family in 1891 with no luck. Maybe they were overseas with their father.
I hoped they might be with Mary who married Robert Godfrey but no luck.

BTW - James in 1881 is born Tocester, Glos. [Towcester?] & he's a gunner in RA. [Royal Artillary?]
There are a number of barracks enumerated in 1881 in Portsmouth. He's at the General Wharf Barracks in Prospect Rd & Broad St.

We are on the right line.
I have his brother Charles service record from when he left the Royal Marines and joined the Royal Navy.
It's not him in the photo though as the men are in army uniform
Thanks to all who have helped, it's time for bed. Will check for messages tomorrow. Dawn

In 1891 brother Charles is in the navy. Looks like he was a Royal Marine.
Name: Charles H Whittard Age: 23 Estimated birth year: abt 1868 Relation: Crew Gender: Male Where born: Woolwich, Kent, England Civil parish: Royal Navy Town: Portsmouth Dockyard County/Island: Hampshire Country: England Street address:
Occupation: private
Registration district: Portsea Island Sub-registration district: Portsea Town ED, institution, or vessel: Iron Duke
It's quite possible Thomas was in the army overseas because I can't find him in 1891 as yet.

P.S. James was in the army in the 1881 census Thomas would have been too young.

That is the family of James Frederick Whittard of Gloucestershire. They are living in Woolwich with a soldier father.
Why don't you think this is your Thomas W? Have you got Thomas's birth cert?
Ozi.
1871 - Thomas's birth from census. Name: Thomas W Whittard Age: 1 month Estimated birth year: abt 1871 Relation: Son Mother's name: Charlotte Gender: Male Where born: Woolwich, Warwickshire, England [image has Kent, Woolwich]
The image is quite difficult to read. I think he may be 4 months which would fit Glitter Baby's birth reg'n find.

Would someone kindly lookup the following please
Thomas Walter Whittard b 9.10.1870 at Woolwich.
I have an old photo with two men in mititary uniform but with nothing written on back. I think I have identified one.
1881 census has a James Frederick Whittard b 1859 at Frocester Glos a soldier at Portsmouth.
As they are brothers I just wonder if Thomas Walter was also in the army.
Is there any way in which I could find out which regiment James Frederick was in?
Many thanks, Dawn
