The same problem is with the 1891 census.

If Ellen & Bertha, both born in Kingston, & both married in 1918 in Eastbourne, and Bertha is in an orphanage in 1901, then the parents must have died between Bertha's birth in 1896 & 1901.

Nothing apparent in the deaths either.

A cert is essential.

Ken......

I think you are probably correct, and that the Ellen Christina Mcgregor born 1890, is probably our girl....

But WHERE is she in 1901 ? I have searched in all manner of ways. Helen /Ellen / Nell / Nellie etc. The same with the surname..........

I think the way to go is to get the marriage certificate..

Regards

Going on the born in Kingston theme, see Bertha.

There is an Ellen Christina McGregor born in Kingston in Mar 1890 Ref 2a 334

David.......

I think it would be a good idea, to get the marriage certificate too........

However , there is a birth for a......

Christina Helen Mcgregor / registered Islington / Dec 1899 / vol 1b page 393........

1901 census

30 Romilly Road . Highbury. Islington

Matthew Mcgregor / head / age 33 / printer / born Scotland

Betsey / wife age 32 / born Scotland
Matthew / son / age 7 / born Bloomsbury
Archibald / son / aged 4 / born Islington
CHRISTINA / daughter / age 1 / born Islington

Of course this may not be the family you seek, but Christina would be very near in age to Ernest, if he was born in 1893.....

I should point out that Bertha Macgregor is in an orphanage in 1901.

You mention in the subject line a sister Bertha.

There are records of a a Bertha Jane L Macgregor, born in Kingston on Thames in 1896 & getting married in Eastbourne in 1918.

You forgot to mention her surname.

She married as either Ellen C MacGregor or Helen C MacGregor.

Have you got the marriage cert? If so, it will give her father's name and her age at marriage (hopefully!) which will help in finding her birth.

Have you searched for her birth on freebmd or Ancestry?

Helen Christine married in July - Sept 1918 in Eastbourne an Ernest G Gates.

Where did she come from. There is no trace of her in the census up to 1901 indicating that she may have been born after that date. She was believed to have lived in the Lewisham area of London for a while after her marriageup until at least the early 1930s.

In the 1960s her and Ernest lived in Eastbourne , at Hampden Park in a grace and favour flat above a bakery, near the Rail station. Ernest worked for Unigate dairies and also for Eastbourne Council.

Does anyone out there have a lead for me ?

thanks

David
