Thank you for looking Lew.
Daviot's 30 odd miles away so that's definately worth a look. I know she died in 1901 and her father was William.
It sounds like it could be her so I'll try and get more details.
Thanks again

Thanks for your time Lew As you can see, her name was Shikelton, Shekleton, Shickleton and Shackleton. I believe Shackleton was the right spelling but a lady I know who remembers playing in her garden as a child calls her Katie Sheckleton! The 1891 census cannot be found either. I will keep looking and hopefully something will turn up.
Thanks again

This is one of my brick walls at the moment. John is my g grandfather and believe it or not this was not a very common name in this area at the time.
I believe I have found him in 1861, born in Inverallan, Invernesshire and living with the Dallas family in Duthil, Moray and working as a millers assistant.
I know from family stories he was involved with the daughter, Janet and had one son that I know of, John. He died in1897 and I have the death certificate stating him to be illegitimate. Parents are John Smith, meal miller and Jessie Dallas deceased, Jessie had also married someone else by this time.
I also have the birth certificate of my grandfather, William born 1886 to John Smith, meal miller and Catherine Shickleton. He was also illegitimate.
On Catherine's death certificate she is single and living at William's house. Her mother is Jessie MacGillivray, father not known.
1) Why can't I find Catherine's birth anywhere?
2) Why can't I find John Smith's death anywhere? I can't find a marriage for him so assume he stayed single.
I have an 1851 census for Inverallan, Invernesshire with a John Smith born 1840. His parents are William and Ann. Familysearch and scotlandspeople have a marriage for William Smith and Ann Grant, right time and place. William is a Master Mason. Would John not have gone into the family business? He was not the oldest son but I would have thought he'd do masonry and not milling.
I have searched sp for John's death putting in Grant as mothers maiden name but nothing's coming up.
Thanks for looking and if anyone can help or suggest anything I would be most grateful.
