I am looking for ROBERT ELLIOTT, born c1825 in Bideford, Devon

parents: Samuel and Mary Elliott

Robert was a mason so dad probably was too.

Where were the parents born, and when?
Were there any brothers or sisters?

Robert married in Newport, Monmouth,

Any help appreciated.

The 41 won't give you where & when Parents were born..its say Yes or no to being born in County or not...and ages were rounded

This is a possible for 1851 ( so I can then trace Samuel etc in 1841 as Robert not obvious in 1841) Do you know any of Robert's siblings to confirm or exclude this one?

forget the one above, I don't think its right.

Have you tried the Online Parish Clerks for Devon? If you look on Genuki, and then home in on Bideford, to see if there is one, or if the transcribed baptisms are on the site, I have found Devon is quite well covered for additional help.

Robert married sept. qtr. 1846 in Newport, Monmouth.

I don't know the names of his siblings.

I wondered whether his parents were born in Devon too, or were they born in Monmouth? As dad was a journeyman mason maybe he travelled round a lot.

No, I haven't tried the parish clerks yet.

Why do you think the Samuel you found wasn't right?
Was he a mason?

I found Samuel with his family in the 1841 and Robert wasn't among the children.

a journeyman tradesman, doesn't necessarily mean they travelled. Its what they were deemed to be for the 3 years (I think it was 3) after their apprenticeship was completed, ie a sort of post-qualification period to mark them as recently qualified. Although clearly he may have travelled for work.
Unfortunately Samuel, Mary, Robert and Elliott are all fairly common names! I certainly couldn't find the family in Devon, which I would have thought more likely, as Robert was born there... but of course anything is possible, so given that, they could have been ANYWHERE!!

Have you exhausted the IGI, looking for Samuel and Mary's marriage, Robert's baptism, and baptisms of siblings?
