Gillian, the reference above is the CENSUS reference, not the birth reference, the birth ref takes the form of Name, year/qtr, Registration district, County, Volume and page number.

This COULD be the birth of Richard in the 1891 census above.

If Alfred married in 1898, it would appear that the 1891 census one is a bit young.

Hi Keith have alfred marriage cert married to emily cushway father occ.general dealer mothers namelouisa green have alfred apply with your refence rg12 etc and they say no trace

Have you got Alfred on any census?
Have you got a marriage cert with his father's name?
In other words how sure are you that you have the right birth cert?
Before 1875 birth registration was not compulsory.

Hi Gill, do you have the marriage cert for Alfred? What is his fathers occupation on that?
Also what is his mothers name?
Have you found him on any other census other than the 1901 when he is married?

Hi On my grandfather birth cert it has his father as above name alfred (his son) was born 28 march 1878 registration dist st saviour southwark county of surrey but trying to trace richard is getting difficult on alfred birth it says richard occupation is a general dealer but the one i keep getting up they say they cannot find birth cert for him when applied for via gro site alfred married in 1898 in walworth london if i cant find richard details then i will have just to give up because do not know where to go from now Gll
