Is anyone able to find James and Joanna HUMPHRIS (note spelling) in the 1841 census. They were both born in Gloucestershire in around about 1790 and they might have a teenaged son John.

Thanks

GlitterBaby

Yes, she's been mis-transcribed as Jama in the 1851. Just can't find them in 1841!

Hi Andrew
I think the 1841 census found by Glitter Baby, Portland Rose and Jim is the one you are looking for as names were often spelt as the enumerator thought they should be not necessarily by the correct spelling. This has happened on several occasions during my own research when a surname has been spelt differently on more than one occasion. Also note the civil parish and the registration district they are the same in both the 1851 census which you say is correct and in the 1841
Hope this is of some help

Hmm....no wonder it's easy to get confused!

This is the surname transcription 1841 on Findmypast for Rose and Jim's Ancestry finds.

The image clearly reads Humphreys.
