I have previously looked at the census entry for Wallace Cox at Bashford ,but I have n't been able to find any trace of him in the Birmingham area.

One of the few things my mother told me about William was that he was " a bit of a lad" and his service records seem to bare this out.

His service records make fascinating reading. His wife Kate is at Francis St, Birmingham. He was often jailed for a few days for not taking orders, misuse of his rifle and being verminous, amongst other things.

If he married Kate Checkley in 1918, someone has a tree that says Wallace William Cox was born in Old Basford, Nottingham in 1875

It can't be him though as William was born in 1889, making him 14

The usual birth certificate searches have been unsuccessful

I believe my grandfather William Cox spent some time in a children's home and have found a 1901 Census listing for a boy of the right age and name resident in the Marston Green
Cottage Homes ( then in Warwickshire, now demolished ). I have been waiting for ages for Birmingham Council to look at the records on my behalf ( because of Data Protection Act) but have heard nothing yet.

I have found William's WW1 Service Records which say that his only known relative was a sister called Nellie but her address was stated as unknown.William gave his place of birth as Marston Green.

His father, as stated on William's marriage certificate, was Wallace William Cox, a carpenter, deceased.Again I have had no luck finding anything on census or BMD searches.

William was a Fruiterer and on enlistment was living at 13 Dora Road Handsworth Birmingham in the house of a Mrs
Griminet( ? difficult to read the handwriting)

This is all the information I have. If any of this rings any bells with anyone I would be most grateful to hear from them
