Ah, so if I'm understanding better, it's quite certain your grandmother died young -- probably before your mother was adopted, since the reason for that would have been you grandfather's inability to care for her, likely.

So your grandmother must have died in or shortly before 1934?

... Well, I just perused the image for each quarter from the beginning of 1932 to the end of 1935, with no luck.

If you've met your mum's half-siblings, you know when their father remarried? Edna would have to have died before then ... perhaps she was very ill for a time, and they were unable to care for your mum, but Edna didn't die until some time after she was relinquished for adoption.

On the other hand, perhaps Edna ran off with the census taker. ;)

Dear Kathryn B,
I know that her Husband ( my Grand father ) has died and is buried in Ilkley in Yorkshire and we have been to visit his grave.
We have found out that my Mum had 2 half Brothers and a half Sister.
My Grandad re-married after my Mum was adopted and had 2 sons and a Daughter of which we met approx 2 years ago which is fantastic, but sadly one Brother died last year.
They too were unaware that they had a half Sister.
Thank again, Bette Taylor x

You have given me loads to go on thanks.
It may take me a while to get there as I am learning as I go along, but with your help I should get there alot quicker.

Also, this is the birth of her husband, I'd guess:

Name: Leonard Arthur D Webster
Year of Registration: 1908
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Ashby de la Zouch
County: Derbyshire, Leicestershire
Volume: 7a
Page: 99

and it's likely he died before 1984, since there's no death record that's a good match for that info, assuming he stayed around the same area.

Hi Bette! I'll just butt in -- we're all hobbyists here, many of us expert procrastinators though. ;)

Don't worry about the "folio" etc. -- that's just part of the record that got copied and pasted. It's useful if you're documenting the sources of info, but that's all.

All of the birth, marriage and death info here is available on line, free and fast, at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

by searching for the names you're after, with approximate years, e.g.

After mid-1911, the spouse's surname is shown with the name of the person who got married, so you no longer have to guess at which person in a list s/he married. After the same time, the mother's birth surname is shown with the names in birth records. So you can search for a birth with one surname where the mother's surname was the known surname of the wife in a couple.

That's how you can be certain that her parents were Burbidge and Rylett. Go visit FreeBMD and play with it, and you'll get the results, and get used to using the search engine to find things in the database that volunteers have been transcribing to make it searchable.

They're still working on it though -- if your Edna did die young, the year in question won't have been transcribed yet, so you can't find the death record by doing a quick database search. You have to read through the untranscribed pages, by downloading images -- on page for each quarter of each year -- and looking for a matching name with the rightish age in the rightish place.

Dorsetbaby copied out census details. She omitted the census year. ;) But if Adolphus was born in 1870 and he was 10 in that census, it must be the 1881 census. (Because the census is in March, people are often a year younger than they will be later in the year.)

The 1881 census is free to search at

http://www.familysearch.org

and for the other years you need to subscribe to somewhere like Ancestry.

Getting back to Edna -- once you have that birth certificate, post her exact birthdate here. In case she didn't die young, deaths after 1984 can be searched by just given name and birthdate. In the meantime, here is one record that matches up with what you know about her so far -- her married surname (unless she remarried), and a birthdate that falls into the 3rd quarter of 1912, when her birth was registered, and a location in the general area of where she was born and married.

Name: Edna Webster
Birth Date: 29 Aug 1912
Death Registration Month/Year: Feb 2001
Age at death (estimated): 88
Registration district: Mansfield
Inferred County: Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire
Register number: B26D
Entry Number: 63

I'd wait to see whether the birthdates match up, and if so (or if a death record is found that matches name and birthdate), order the death cert. It may have info about a family member who reported the death, e.g. You might also then be able to find a published obituary in microfilmed newspaper archives at a library that would give family members' names.

Dear Dorsetbaby,
Thank you so much for the information that you have sent to me. I am new to this website and have only just begun to search my family tree and not too sure about all the details yet.
Regarding the Rylett + Burbidge family details, could you tell me what or when the ages relate to please ? and also the RG number, piece, Folio, page and address at the bottom of your reply ? as I am not familiar with these yet, thank you.
The reason that I am trying to find my Grandma ( Edna Irene Webster ) is because my Mother ( Hazel Marguerita Davis-nee Webster ) was adopted when she was 4 years old ( and then took on the name Whitworth ) and has never known what happened to her Mother.
She heard that she had died at a very young age but that is not known for sure, but if she was alive today then she would be 95 years old.
My Mother has always wondered where she might be since she was a little girl and if she did die then she wants to find out where she was layed to rest so that she could visit her grave and I want to help her to do that.
If you have any ideas on how I could locate her, that would be fantastic.
I have found her Marriage details and purchased the Certificate and located her Birth details and I have sent off for the Certificate.
The Birth details said that her Mothers maiden name was Rylett.
How did you manage to find all those details ? are you related to the family ? or is it a hobby of yours.
Thank you again so much and I hope to hear from you again soon , take care, from Bette Taylor x

Bette

Bette Report 25 Dec 2007 18:51

I am searching for my Grandma- Edna Irene Webster ( nee Burbidge) year of Birth 1912.
Does anyone have any knowledge of her whereabouts.
She married Leonard Arthur Denzil Webster on April 26th 1930.
She then had a Daughter ( My Mother ) Hazel Marguerita Webster on November 8th 1930 at Bond Street Maternity Hospital in Leicester.
She was known to have lived in Duncan Road Leicester at that time and previously in Melrose Street Leicester.
Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
