Hi Michelle and thanks for you offer.

I am looking for Mary Alice Sumner who from the 1871 census when she was married to George Rampton ,M.1869 in Mortimer , Berks .and born Newbury c1846.
I cannot find any record at all prior to the marriage except for a child born in 1866 in Rotherwick, Hants.
The child's name was Emma Jane Sumner ...I have the B. cert. but is named as Rampton on 1871 census.
Basically I am looking for Mary Alice Sumner before 1866

Many thanks Michelle......Lulli x

Hello Michelle,
I don't know if your offer still stands but I'm having no end of trouble trying to find out an ancestor on the 1841 census. I have tried Ancestry. com etc using all the various combinations of his name without any luck.
The ancestor is a JOHN (BULL) Binge born in c1786 I think in Yorkshire, but was baptised in Lincolnshire. His Mother was a CATHARINE BULL. He died in Sheffield in 1843. His wife and family were all living in Sheffield and his occupation was as a Pawnbroker.
Can you help please?
Michael

Sorry been out for a bit! Taken a look-not much showing is there? tricky one this. I have a few like this in my tree and what i have found is the place of birth can differ from census to census and from person to person-ie Mum may give correct place of birth then grandad next census writes it as different and when the child grows up they often wrote place of birth as the last place they remember living as a child! Found this one Berkshire-East.Hanney but not Newbury but Husbands working tonight-not fair is it!so i'm online all eve once my daughter gets to bed so promise i will look further into this.

Here's one for now-

Hi Michelle,

Could you try to find the following person ( my Grandfather) in 1871 and 1881 Census. He was orphaned and ' put out ' to a Baker to learn the trade around 1870. Have him in 1891 and 1901.

ARTHUR GEORGE STANWAY ( reversible forenames)

Born 1863 Lambeth London Father Abraham George

May have been in workhouse/orphanage/school.

Thanks and a happy New Year

Camille

Camille Report 31 Dec 2007 19:23

Hi Michelle , yes this is a difficult lady to find. I have seen the ones you have given me because all of the Mary A's were Mary Ann, not Alice also her Father's name was on her marriage cert. as Charles..Lab.

I thank you so much for your time and trouble Michelle..........Happy New Year

Sorry taken so long was out earlier and had a few to look up.I have been on yours for a while and nothing i'm afraid found about both of his wives and also saw Amelia in the 1841 census but he's nowhere!
Have you tried searching boat records around this time maybe he was away?Or he could be a census stray?Have you tried a google search for Sheffield strays?
Happy New Year to you and let me know if i can help anymore.

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for all your info. re Arthur George Stanway and family. Yes I do have all that you have mentioned - finding all about his family was a total surprise to me. I thought he was all alone in the world - an orphan! In fact it was his mother who died in 1868 - his father remarried in 1871 and had Henry living with him. I have never been able to find anything about Arthur until 1891 Census when he was with his father and family! What a surprise that was! I know he was living with a baker from a very early age, where he was taught his trade. It is a mystery! You can reply direct to me if you wish.

Hi Michelle,

Just wondering if you have been able to find anything in 1871 and 1881 Census's for my Grandfather: ARTHUR GEORGE STANWAY b. 1863 Lambeth.?
Thankyou for all the stuff you've found so far about his family - that is all correct, including that ABRAHAM ( Arthur's father) had a brother George b.1843.
The only thing I'm looking for is ARTHUR'S where- abouts in the above mentioned Census. He was probably in Home/School for orphans at the time of 1871 Census and ' Placed Out ' with a baker for training in the 1881 Census so may have had a different name.

I realise it's not easy and don't expect you to labour too hard on it! Just let me know if you can't continue!

Many thanks anyway - Joy Stringer

I am also running another thread on records board so have been busy.Sorry i hadnt had a chance to check further for you.
I have time tonight as i have finished 2 big look ups i was helping people with.
I can't promise you i can find him,but i am pretty stubborn and i don't give up easily!
You mentioned different name?any clues to that?

I will put any findings on this thread for you-if any!
