ive had a very interesting email from a cousin i found on this site,i only have her contact details on here,no phone number etc,,her father is my grandads brothers son..her grandad my grandads brother died not long ago so its still a raw subject with her father so i cant ask the questions i want to, here it is... i have always thought my mums maiden name was linstead originally,ive just been told that our name was changed from linstedt to linstead right before the war,i presume 2nd world war,why was this? why was it kept in the dark and can anyone help me resolve the story and help me find the linstedt family just before the change of name...i dont have much but here goes,my grandfather was francis joseph linstead b. 14.nov 1925 as far as i know his father thomas linstead was born in the early 1890s in london,southwark i believe,but i now know he may have changed his name from linstedt..so i need help finding a thomas e linstedt from early 1890s from london i presume,i want to find out if they were escaping something from the war etcany linstedts before and were they english..linstedt doesnt sound english,ive googled it but no luck in where it originates,please help,its a mystery not yet told,thanks maxine

The thing is that people could change their surname any time they wanted as long as it wasn't to defraud. It didn't have to be done officially. You could be right in that they wanted to Anglicise the name if it was foreign.

your right about making it sound english..i think i may have found my great grandfather..thomas eugine linstedt b.dec.1892 st olave southwark.im going to type him in with the linstead surname when its been changed and see what i get
