Women.' by Lucy Frost who did loads of research on this
subject.
Scottish women and their children who were caught stealing
to feed themselves were exiled to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania)
on board the Atwick-1837, and follows their lives there during and
after release and of their survival or not in some cases.

Just ordered Harriet Sergeant...."Among the Hoods"......true story,how she met up with a Gang and their lives...sounds amazing. l heard her talking on the radio the other day and thought..'a must read her book!'

Which one Julia? I don't read many thrillers - have to be in the mood, but the couple I have read of his I have enjoyed.

I am reading good old John Grishams 'Painted House'. Can practgically see Henry Fonda in the lead roll.

AnninGlos, after you mentioned Harlen Corban the other day, I was in a cheap shop on Saturday and saw one of his books for £2, so I bought thinking that although I have seen his books around for a good while, I have never read him, and if I did not like the style, I can send it to the charity shop.

Haven't read the Help but enjoyed the secret life of Bees some time back.

Enjoyed 'The Help' very much and now halfway through 'The Secret Life of Bees'....... Sue Monk Kidd.
I think both books have great descriptive writing.

Will look for Eric Syke's 'If I Don't Write This Nobody Else Will ' he was one of my favourite comedians.

Tess, the Eric Sykes book is very good so far and starts with his birth
which i must admit i felt sorry for him through his childhood. It takes
you through his working life and service during war to old age.
I read Hattie..Bio of Hattie Jacques by Andy Merriman, which I found
interesting and how Eric treated her in their working life.

BC, yes it is a bit slow going. In fact I have swapped to "A Ghost at the Table" by Suzanne Berne. Just for a quicker fix.
Will get back to Night Train in a couple of days, and will probably read it again in 6-12 months time

"Me Before You" sounds great. I have read other books by JoJo Moyes and have liked what I have read.

I need to do an actual list of authors to look out for, as I am so bad at names .
Will be looking out for the Eric Sykes book, rather like biographies.

Just finisihed 'Me Before You' by JoJo moyes and was totally enthralled by it. It's heroine is Lou Clarke a 26 year old who has just lost her job at the local cafe and hasn't a clue what to do next. The nice man at the Job Centre sends her as a carer/companion to a quadriplegic who prior to a horrific accident, was a rich, successful, high flyer who lived a full adventurous life. He is now bitter and deeply depressed at his condition and....but I wont tell the punch line!!

It is not a slushy romance, anything but. If you do not weep copiously at the ending, then I will eat my bonnet....*sniff.... :-D :-D

I'm reading "Night Train to Lisbon" by Pascal Mercier. (translated from German).

It is the opposite of action-packed, but really interesting.

The "star" is a mild mannered, middle-aged teacher Raimund Gregorius, who without warning quits his ordinary life and sets out on a journey of discovery, researching into the life of a man he has never met.

I'm really enjoying it, possibly partly because of its slow pace.

Got this paperback from my local Charity Shop (three for a pound)

Now onto Island of the blue Dolphins, a true story by Scott Rose. First read it when I was 11 and tracked it down last week on Ebay. :-)

Finished 'The Song of Achilles' by Madeline Miller, her
first novel which she has won a prize for. Fact mixed
with fiction and written very well, would recommend
this book, if you like P. Gregory style then this could be
for you.
Going to read next 'If I Don't Write This Nobody Else Will.'
by Eric Sykes.

Just read a good one Bedpans and bobby socks by Barbara Fox. A true story of a group of British nurses who go to work for a couple of years in the US. And five of them go off around America in an old car. Set in the 50s and written by the daughter of one of the nurses from letter written to her mother.
