I would be interested to hear if anyone has been successful in finding an adopted person through the GRO Adoption Contact Register. I am considering registering in the hope of finding my nephew who was adopted in 1961/62. I have heard varying reviews so thought I would seek someone who has used the service successfully.

It's not that the register doesnt work but it depends if the adopted child wants to find info on their birth family so they register too .

I do understand that both parties need to want to make contact but there is no evidence that people are actually registering for this service. That is what I am trying to find out as if no one is registering then you are never going to get a match.

What makes you think no one is registering? I have seen people on this site say they are going to use the service and I'm sure the service would close down if it wasn't used.

If you register yourself then all you need is for the person you are looking for to decide they want to find their birth family and decide to register them self. No one can force someone to look for their birth family and many adopted people just don't want to.

If you're looking for birth or adopted family, you do need to use all sites or search facilities available.

As Kath says, sometimes adopted family have no interest in finding their birth family, especially if they've had a 'good' adoption. Reading various threads on this board, its obvious that quite a few people wait until their 'parents' have died.

Thanks for your responses. I had read a thread on this site that actually said that the Adoption Contact Register was a waste of time but, as you say, it would not exist if people did not use it. I just would have been interested to hear from someone that has gone down that route. At the end of the day I will use this facility in the first instance to see if there is a match. Many thanks.

In 9 years they had 406 matches out of 18,600+ registered adoptees and birth family.

It might be a small proportion but I bet those 406 families were glad that they registered.
