A puzzle - that hopefully someone can shed light on.

Thomas James Nicholls, born June 1852 in St Pauls, Covent Garden, married Charlotte Scowen, daughter of Robert Scowen. Charlotte was born in Islington in 1858.

Charlotte married for a second time to William Sheppard 26 Aug 1900 in St Mathew, Islington. She is a widow and he is a widower. Her father's name is given as Robert so I think the marriage is correct. I have also found a possible death for Thomas James Nicholls in 1896, although the age is too young.

My query is the following:

On the 1901 Census, William & Charlotte are living in Islington - 22 Queensbury St - William Sheppard is shown as the Head, Charlotte is shown as his wife and there are three children shown Florrie, Nellie and William Page. How can this be? Is it that all the children have a middle name of Page (possibly their dead mother's maiden name) or what?

Would welcome any thoughts.

Good to see that I am not the only one who thought the presenters were rubbish at the various events. I was listening to something on the radio in the car and it seems as though folk weren't impressed with the radio coverage either :-(


I agree Arthur, Richard Dimbleby would be spinning! So much seems to be geared towards youthfulness with the BBC but they forget that age and experience brings it's own benefits.


What with the Jubilee, visits from physios for my OH and half term, I don't know whether I am coming or going.........keep getting my days mixed up....... :-S

Hopefully, back to normal this week. Well, as normal as I can be of course!

Lovely to see Reece again....I imagine you are finding all sorts of things tucked away and, of course, you have to have a sit down and check through them........ :-D


I'm helping my friend (the one who was poorly) to sort out her cupboards etc. She is managing fine at home but wants to sort through things. It takes twice as long as it should because she has forgotten about most of it so it all has to be investigated etc......good fun though.... :-D


My grandson is 13 today so we are off to see him shortly.

Reece - sounds wonderful - its very grey & damp here on the southcoast today - glad i did the washing yesterday - all dried - ironed - etc now - had a whole weekend off (dont faint Cynthia) all the housework finished by 9am this morning

Free to do family tree work - feels very strange - we didn't win the Lotto so still a slave to the bills - we have a week off in June for our wedding anniversay - would have been nice to get away for a few days - but that wont happen - still a week away from work is better than nothing.

I would love to meet up next year too Sue & Reece - we will have to find a meeting point close to all of us.

I see I can't spell "Bottom" !

Having a "sit down" and a search around and I have just come up with "Burton End, Haverhill, Suffolk". Sounds more like it and the birth date fits with his age on the shipping indent. So more confident about ordering the record from NSW now.

It is lovely and sunny here this morning and the bees are buzzing around the garden already and I have seen a couple of swifts wheeling over the trees and ring neck parakeets are screeching by while the crows, jays and magpies terrorise the blackbirds nesting in our garden. The robins and dunnocks have fledged and are now in hiding.

Is anybody watching "Spingwatch" ?

Yes, I thought the presenters were awful - I tried to ignore them most of the time and just enjoy the spectacle on the Thames. I would have loved to be there, too.

I notice your research interest in Suffolk - I have just found a relative, John Scott who emigrated in 1851 on the Emperor and on the ship's indent records place of birth, Botomm end, Suffolk. Could be anywhere, yes? Bosmere is the nearest I can think of - says he is 22 years of age but that could be right or not. Nearest one I can find is b. 1834 Debenham making him 17 in 1851. I may have to buy the records for the ship from NSW to see if there is anything else on there.

Do you have any antique maps or know where I could look up more information, please. Just a thought no need for an immediate answer.

I think you had to be there to appreciate the Pageant on Sunday.

Having read the criticisms of the BBC coverage, I find I am in agreement with them. Not enough info was given about the boats participating - for an example, the little ships that participated in the evacuation of Dunkirk surely deserved a short history.

The newest presenters do not have the experience or gravitas of the past - Richard Dimbleby must be turning in his grave. Silence would have been most welcome at times instead of the attempt to 'jolly up' the occasion.

I should have been back long ago but.....

It was lovely to see you back Evelyn, and good to hear that your family are there too.

Just reading what you thought of the Diamond jubilee celebrations - the pageant on the Thames was amazing, and just how they stuck it out through the downpour I'll never know. My family came up from Dorset and had a good spot by Tower Bridge so that by the time the last boats got to them they were all thoroughly soaked! They loved every minute of it and managed to get some wonderful pictures too. I only watched a little bit of the concert - loved the light effect and pictures projected onto Buckingham Palace and the fireworks at the end.. Family were here on Tuesday and just after they went off I walked up to our green and watched the RAF flypast - the rain came just as I was walking home.

No, Anne, haven't started packing yet but doing a lot of sorting through cupboards - I managed to get Miles to take a couple of big boxes of plastic Airfix models (ships and aeroplanes) that he had made when he was a boy.

Here are the girls' chickens - they lay lots of eggs, and they also have a family of guinea pigs plus Alfie their cat

Sue - at least you got decent presenters - dont know what happened to the BBC ones this year for both the Flotilla & concert.

I think the BBC need to refund some of our licence fee to pay for the Creche and keep them in there.

Did anyone else think the horses trotted along very fast on Tuesday.

All in all it was a good weekend

I must admit I too enjoyed the Diamond celebrations ,the times were all out for us though I did watch as much as I could but I just had to go to bed about three quarters through the boat trip.

Watch some of the concert,even though she is an Ozzie Kylie gets on my nerves too same old songs and I think it is about time Elton hung up his piano too.

Cliff was great ..he is from my time and I have always loved him from a teenager.
Can't say I enjoyed seeing Camilla sitting with the queen but you know my views on her.

We are well into our winter now ..it just poured down all night and it has not stopped yet.

Busselton has just had chlorine put into our water and we all hate it ,we used to use the UV way of disinfecting but the powers that be have decided to destroy our beautiful water.

Is the UK still using Chlorine or have they stopped it,I would be interested to know,it is a carcinogen so the internet says.... I am really worried about drinking it ,you can't make a good cup of tea out of it.

Well I am off to the boards and have a look around.

Hi all


I managed to watch the last 90 minutes of the Pageant ...... that was from 8 am to about 9:30 am, our time :-D


Then we watched a replay of the Concert last night (ie, Tuesday night).



We're going up to the cabin on Thursday afternoon, returning either Saturday or Sunday, depending on the weather, and on what we get done.

We're not going to stay there, we've booked a motel room in the nearest small town (60 km away) for Friday night, and will get it for another night if we do decide we need to go in again on Saturday.

This is the first time we've had chance to get up there this year, and we want to see what shape it is in, and to see whether we have had any "visitors" (4-legged or 2-legged :-D ).


So, I'll see you in a few days.

i enjoyed the pagent but thourght the bbc coverage was poor instead of keeping on th pagentkept going tohangers on who were talking mostly rubbish

i have heard that sky news channel were very good

i asked for help on the boards to day and my did i get some so helpfull and kind so now i have a lot of work to do

we have just had a huge thunder storm and terrific rain

Agree that Charles' speech at the end of the concert was perfect. Also agree tyhe concert was not up to much. Why we had to have so much of Kylie???

Really thought the opera singers were excellent and the appearance of Mud on the roof of Buckingham Palace was enhanced by the screenings on the front - apparently a new technique developed here.

Thoroughly agree Arthur - loved watching them jiggle about - loved the way the Queen nudged charles to look at his dad jiggling about - just like a normal family - shame the Duke wasn't able to with her for the rest of it - it must have been very sad for her.

Loved Charles speech at the concert - apart from the fireworks it was one of the best bits - thought the concert itself was dire.

Didn't the queen & Camilla have a lot to talk about all three days & evenings - when they were on the TV - they never seemed to stop nattering - it was really nice to see - & for once everyone seems to look well dressed - except Sam Cam at St Pauls -

It was a very good weekend & I managed to get a few days off as well - Cynthia - someone get her a chair - where's the smelling salts.

Tried to stay glue to the tv but had visitors.......Sunday afternoon (Pageant) and Monday morning......as it was family, they were told I was likely to gag them!! :-D


The concert was okay but, I think the presenters were rubbish. It was as though they didn't know how to be funny without being 'blue'. Peter Kay should have had a longer spot and what about Ken Dodd? He would have kept the proceedings going..... ;-)


I was so sorry that the Duke of Edinburgh was poorly :-( The Queen must have felt so lost without him but she did cover it well. She looked rather sad and lonely going down the aisle of St. Paul's at the back of the procession all on her ownio......... :-(


Anyway, it seems he is recovering well and may be home in time to celebrate his 91st birthday.......I thought they were both amazing to stand out in the wind and rain at the Pageant.


We had a little celebration at church - the prayers were all dedicated to HM and the hymns were traditionally national. Afterwards, everyone was offered a piece of cake and a selection of drinks to make a toast to her. Just enough without going over the top.


I have cleaned the house from top to bottom today and am now enjoying a sit down. I'm out for a brief time tonight so am glad of the rest.


Sent for a marriage cert for one of my mysterious lot and have had a refund! Only about another 14 with the same initials to go!!! I was really hoping the postman would call today and then I got the email saying my money was being refunded in full..... :-(

Thoroughly enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations.

Good moment was when the barge carrying the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra passed under Tower bridge and the Royal college of Music choir sang 'Land of Hope and Glory'. The choir looked like drowned rats but sang beautifully.

Even better was when the orchetra played the 'hornpipe' and the Royals jigged around - then the choir sang 'Rule Britannia.

Thank goodness the weather improved for the Concert and the carriage drive.

Sorry I missed your Birthday Cynthia ,Happy Birthday !!! I try to forget mine they are coming to thick and fast for my liking.

I have had a great last few days searching for others on Genes I have really missed it but I do get cross when people do not include all they have on a person then ask for help .
I have just helped someone who did not tell me all and wasted 2 hours she already knew it all.

Evelyn it was wonderfull to see you back and I am sorry you are not coping to well ...as they say time will heal ,it is an easy thing to say but I lost my mother 32 years ago and I still miss her today.

I hope your Son and Daughter In Law cheer you up a bit ...anyway as Sally said you can always nag us when you feel the need to,much love to you .

I am looking forward to seeing some of the Jubilee celebrations,I think Elizabeth has done a great job.

I am waiting for the Games to start me ,I love it all.

Grandaughter just rolled up with Grt Grandaughter so I have to go and have a cuddle.

Glad to hear she is rec9overed now - what a terrible thing to happen.

I am working this morning - but will be home in time to see most of the flotilla - how sad I taped the start and can just wind it on & catch up hopefully - its a once in a lifetime thingy - goign to watch the horse show tonight as well.

I am not interested in the concert tomorrwo - but OH is - so will do my tree while he has the Tv on - some of the acts may be good - but far too young for me a lot of it. I prefer my classical & opera really occasional ballad - but John Denver is long gone now & tony Christie is a bit past it.
Meatloaf seems to have vanished & good old Queen. Those were the days.

Hope everyone has a good Jubilee weekend - will pop in again later as shouldn't be on here while working - ok in my break.
