Hello all.

Sally, it just shows that persistance pays off! Glad you found your missing aunts. It is always sad to read of the deaths of small children I agree.

I was saddened by the terrible news from Belgium where that coach carrying the school children crashed into a wall. Those poor, poor, parents. It makes you wonder what caused the crash though??

I have heard from Evelyn :-D

She has been a bit poorly and, obviously, busy. She sends her love to you all and I have told her that we look forward to seeing her back with us when she feels the time is right. Let's hope it will not be too long!

It's a beautiful morning here so I will go and get some jobs done.

Hope everyone is okay..............love to you all. Cx. <3

I am back online thank heaven's! :-D

I really do appreciate being able to play around without worrying if I am 'over the limit'! got really fed up messing around with the dongle even though it came in very useful.

Anne, if you want a flying pig......I have one! My daughter bought it for me a couple of years ago as a bit of fun. It suspends from the ceiling and is made of wood! Have to admit that I don't have it hanging around very much though..........

I had a phone call yesterday from my friend who has been so poorly. She is going home on 2nd April.......she has been in a care home for over 12 months, so this is a big step for her. She is looking forward to it but, understandably, a little nervous. She will be having help so it shouldn't be too bad for her.

I still haven't heard from Evelyn.......so am slightly concerned. :-(

Hope our other missing friends are okay. Love. Cx. <3

Tabitha Report 12 Mar 2012 13:00

Well its all ticking over well on here.

We had a semi lovely weekend - Sunday am was a bit grim & of course its a lovely sunny day here today.

OH has very little work this week - so if the weather stays nice he may get some gardening done (we both dislike gardening) I may see a few pigs flying by soon.

Please can i have a few positive thoughts in the work direction for him - need a few pupils. Its good in one way for his record as he had 5 first time passes in two weeks - good for his records - :-D :-) :-) :-D - rubbish for our bank account. :-( :-( :-( :-(.

Sylvia - I know he (the Dr) couldn't tell me - he probably didn't even realise we were connected - thinking back - my mum kept everything to herself - i only found out who he was because i was getting married. They wouldn't let me get married unless they had my fathers details - even then she didn't want me to know.

I would have had a very lopsided tree these days if i hadn't found out.

Cynthia - hope the internet connection is back soon - dongles can be very problematic sometimes.

Take care all <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Still batting around with this dongle thingey - I keep losing data on it and I don't know why...... :-S

Will be so glad to get back to normal - whatever that is!

I've sent a pm to Evelyn but haven't heard back from her yet - do hope she is okay.

GR has been very hit and miss lately what with all the error messages and timing out...... I couldn't get on here last night so went elsewhere :-| :-|

The weather here is grey and slightly grim........could do with some sunshine to cheer us up I think :-D

Take care.... Love. Cx

Hi all
xxx

very wet here, but still getting down close to 0C at nights!

Anne .....

No surprise that the doctor did not say anything about your father, even when you told him you were going to search for your father. They are NOT allowed to discuss one patient with another, except in the case of a minor aged child, or serious illness of spouse or unmarried adult child.

OH and I have been registered with the same doctor since we got married .......... even though now we get a different doctor almost every year because we see Residents doing their 2 years in the Family Practice Programme. I have to give permission for them to talk to OH, or ask for him to come into the examination room with me.

Doctors are actually censured if they do discuss other patients. We knew someone who went to her doctor for the "pill" when she was 19 (age of majority), doctor passed on the information to the girl's mother ............. big stink!!

In fact, it turns out that a doctor cannot tell parents what treatment they are giving to a child over the age of 16, without that child's permission..

It's doctor/patient confidentiality.

Sue ............ glad to hear that all is going well. It will dramatically improve when you get the second eye done.

I wasn't on the internet when I had my eyes done in 2001 ...... but I can remember having to take it easy with the amount of reading I did. I bought a pair of cheap reading glasses from the drugstore, and they helped until it was time to get the prescription ones.

C .......... do hope you get your internet problems sorted out soon. We miss you!! It's so quiet. :-D :-D

Arthur .......... there would be no monetary benefit to saying you were a widow when you were not. BUT there would be a "society" benefit.

Divorce was not available to most people up until WW2 ........ it was far too expensive, and there were few grounds. Many marriages broke up, just as many as today, and folks who could no longer continue to live together would move out. It was quite common for women to then describe themselves as "widowed" ............... it sounds better than "separated", and people don't ask as many questions, especially if you were adept at squeezing out the tears! :-D

I would be willing to bet that even her son-in-law may have thought her husband had died ...... because he would be the one who filled out the form or gave the information to the enumerator. And, she is living in a different town, so could start a "new" life.

Some of those who then married again would describe themselves as "widowed", while others would say they were "single". It didn't matter which they chose because you did not (and still do not) have to show documentation to prove your marital status.

Sally ....... I hope your weather improves soon :-)

Love to all the missing ones .............................

Robert ......... Hope things are going as well as can be expected.

Reece ....... hope all is going well with sorting out the houee for your big move

Evelyn ............. we all miss you. Do take care of yourself. And let us know how you are doing.

Josie - hope the work situation improves, and that both you and OH find jobs soon

Cynthia - get well soon

Sally - I agree with you

One of my OH ancestors - wife died year after his new marriage - he said he was SINGLE on his marriage cert - but Widower on Census - when she was still alive

As several people have said before - people do Lie on the Census & on certificates - just for their own benefit - i am sure it was easier back in the 1800's

I think my fathers life may be an answer - leave home when you are 17 - moved up to the midlands -
get married & Lie about your age on your first marriage - have children -

Leave it 5 years move to another part of the country -later Marry again saying you are the same age still -

Get fed up - go & join the merchant navy - return home move a great distance away where no one knows you -

10 years later get married again still saying you are the same age you were about 15 years ago (which still isn't your right age) -

Move back home - find 2 or 3 women - have children with each - tell them you are 10 years younger than you are -

Then vanish off the face of the earth - back to sea -

Come back to your home town 7 years later - find someone else to marry you - State you are SINGLE on the certificate and you are 10 years younger than you actually are.

Even when he died he had the wrong age on the certificate

Before all the internet records were around when we had to go through manual records & time off work & day trips to London - it took me nearly 5 years to find his actual birth certificate - in the mean time i found all the marriage certs & built up quite a picture of his life.

I think my OH finds him more interesting than i do - he was the one who made me keep at it - I just can't believe everything we keep finding out about him - I even managed to get a copy of the Coroners inquest for him - which was a revelation.

He had the same doctor I had (till he retired) - and not once was anything ever said - even when i discussed with the doctor my decision to try & find out about him - But that is all water under the bridge now

Time i went back to work

Love to all the missing ones - Hope things are going as well as can be expected Robert <3 Hows the packing going Reece <3 Evelyn we all miss you <3 Sue hope things are more in view now <3 Cynthia hope you feel better soon <3 Josie - hope the work situation improves soon <3 Sylvia - hope all things are improving <3

Certainly looks like Maria left the family home.

John was at one time an Inn Keeper and Boat Builder and Maria was the InnKeeper's wife. John ended up making boats with son Harry.

Hello everyone! Life has been a bit up and down lately what with one thing and another.

I was 'proper poorly' on Sunday but had recovered by Monday thank goodness.......... :-( :-)

I'm also having trouble with my ISP again so, until things are sorted, my time on the internet is a bit limited unfortunately. Just when I wanted to do some research too.......typical :-|

Anyway, it's good to hear that Sue's sight is improving and that Anne has recovered from the dreaded lurgy - whatever it was.

Arthur, you need our Sylvia to answer your questions.....she's very good at that sort of thing.......must be her age I guess :-D
Do you think John and Maria separated perhaps?

Better not natter too much........have to watch the allowance on the dongle I am using......such a pain it is!!

Love to all. Cx <3 <3

Old Report 8 Mar 2012 15:19

Would there be any advantage in a woman declaring herself a widow on the Census, when her husband was stillalive.

I ask the question because I found such an instance when looking through other branches of the family.

My great grandfather's brother, John Nicholls, married Maria Dixey in 1868 and had 4 children, in Sudbury.
On the 1891 Census she is living in Sudbury with he younger brother, Arthur, together with her daughter Annie. Occupation is shown as "Living on her Means". She is shown as married.
On the 1901 Census she is shown living with her daughter Annie, now married to Edward Frost, in Wellesbourne Hastings, Warwickshire. This time she is shown as Widow, but there is nothing under occupation.

John Nicholls lived until 1911 and is shown on the 1911 Census living with his son Harry in Sudbury.

your thoughts would be appreciated.

HI Everyone

The eye is coming along very nice,I can see things quite clear now .

Still a problem with the computer but I think tomorrow I will try to find a bigger magnifying glass so as I can read a bit more of the screen .
I will def need readers that is for sure but I just have to wait for the other eye to be done on the 19th ,wait a month then get some reading glasses set up.

Robert if you are thinking of getting yours eyes done I recommend it ,pity it was not available to me when I was a teenager.

Sorry I am not on much at the moment but I will make up for it later ,thankyou all for keeping the thread going.

Love to you all.
