Abner Abbott. No trace on census. Please help

Hi - I've just started on my father's side of the family tree. I have very little information about his family. My grandfather Thomas was born in 1885 and married Edith Rose Dedman in 1915. They had four children - my father Thomas, Henry, Edith and Vera.
From the census of 1891 my grandfather was living with an uncle in Southampton and his marraige cetificate states that his father John Abbott was deceased.
I hope that someone out there may recognise some of these details and contact me.I have now managed to go back to 1878 The marraige of John Abbott and Emily Jane Trodd. Shows Johns father as Abner Abbott. Unable to trace him anywhere on census .Can someone please help.
