Find Ancestors

Can anyone help me with information about Christopher Atkinson, born probably around 1840 or so as his son John Atkinson Laing was born in 1863 in Berwick on Tweed. I believe Christopher was married to Isabella Laing and I understand they went to Canada sometime in the 1880's. However I cannot find them in any census prior to this. Can anyone fill in a few gaps?

Do you actually have the birth cert for John as usually scottish birth certs show the date of marriage of the parents.

Thanks for all that info - the later ones I have and they are correct, but the earlier ones I hadn't found and they've enabled me to put some more pieces of the jigsaw together. I still haven't found Christopher, but at least I feel I'm getting closer! Thanks again.

HI Maureen - I realize that part of the information is missing but I'm not sure how much confidence to put in that information anyway. I think the only way forward is to get the birth certificate & take it from there.

Hi Maureen - I'm trying to find the record of John's birth and am getting nowhere fast! I'm wondering - is Berwick on Tweed classed as Scottish or English? I've always assumed that it would be registered in Scotland as the place of birth is given as Scotland, but I see from some of the census returns, Berwick is Northumberland, England - I didn't think that happened till the mid 1880's. Perhaps I should be looking in the English births. Did you get your information re Berwick from the English or the Scottish census?
