Find Ancestors

I'm trying to find out the origin of the last name "Bennett-Wood". I can trace it back to Francis Head b 1875 who married a "Bennett-Wood".
Francis is the daughter of William Head b 1839 and Ann Margaret Priest.
Any suggestions/ideas?

it would probably help considerably if you named the Bennett-Wood in question, and have you looked for that person in the censuses, for his parents' marriage, etc?

If Francis was a daughter she must be Frances with an e?

I cant find that marriage at freebmd, where and when was it?

Not quite sure what you mean - I would think you just want to trace back the Bennett-Wood family? It's just a double-barrelled name.

Bruce: I don't know the first name of the Bennett-Wood in question, all i know is that a Bennett-Wood married my relative Francis. And according to the tree I have Francis is with an "i" not an "e". Her father William Head b 1839 was born in Melbourne, Australia. I will see what I can find on the George William Bennett-Wood you found.

Jan: I just want to know who it was who made the name a double barrelled name, my maiden name is Bennett-Wood and as far as I know, no one knows who started it .

Wiliam Head b 1817 was born Kent, England he married Sarah Ellis b 1818 (place of birth unknown).

And I'm sorry if I didn't give the right information to begin with, i don't want to waste your time, but your help will solve a big family mystery.

Do you know all five Bennett-Wood-s in the Australian telephone directory, maybe your siblings, lol? The deaths in Australia were Gladys Miranda Bennett-Wood and George Herbert Bennett-Wood, I expect that Gladys Miranda was his wife and a Bennett-Wood by marriage.

I only know how to search for births etc in NSW but maybe others can help with other states.

and then people here who know those things might be able to help, most people who read posts here are in England, but the Australians come out to play at night, well, English night, lol.

It could be as the result of an illegitimate birth, to a Miss or Mrs Wood and a Mr Bennett.

I have changed thread name, I didn't realise it had cut half of it off.
I know 4 of the 5 Bennett-Wood's in the phone directory - just don't know the one in WA.
I'm not sure where Glady's and George fit into the tree.... they aren't known relatives. Most of my side of the family have always been in the phone book as simply "Wood", except for my Uncle up in QLD - his family all go by Bennett-Wood.

Trudianne: WOW - thanks for looking all that up, really appreciate it! Afterthought - so could the "Bennett" bit really be the middle name? Or could it just be an input error. I know that occasionaly various organisations have thought the "Bennett" was my middle name. And why would they suddenly change their name from Wood to Bennett-Wood? Any ideas?

People did things to make them look posh. So Bennet-Wood was a whole lot posher than Wood.

My husband is (oops I'm not supposed to give names of living people), so one of his middle names (he has three!) is Mudhurst, and his Surname is Wilson. His mother, I know, desperately wanted his name to be double-barrelled as her Mudhurst side had no males, but Father Wilson dug his heels in and refused. So it stayed as a middle name. But quit easily mght not have done.

Well, you can all check him out now. Go hang the consequences! I've given up.

As there were 2 Walter Bennett Woods, to distinguish between them maybe they added Bennett & hyphenated the surname!!

I have looked on free UK BDM, there are a number of marriages between Woods & Bennett.
