some of the WWW1 records are now on Ancestry. so if you post the details someone will check to see if any of his records have survived

Hi Adrian
The only information on Thomas's medal card is-
Leinster regiment, service number 5557, Victory Medal and British Medal
You are right when you say the it's better to work backwards so maybe you should start with the names of your grandparents and where and when they were born.

In 1919 Royal Garrison Artillery

Leinster was an Irish regiment. Have a look at this website:

http://tinyurl.com/3gt7tc

His medal card is on Ancestry, but you already have that, and unlike some which give addresses on the back, his is blank.

I think you can search Ancestry for free for deaths after 1984.

You might then need to ask for look-ups or join Ancestry or Findmypast to find births/marriages between 1930 and 1984, if they were in England and Wales. If Thomas is from Ireland, you may need to trace these through their registration system. Do you think Horace was perhaps born in England/Wales? The birth registration details may be available for free on Free BMD if it was around 1910-1925.

well my nan was born in wisbech, cambridgeshire so im guessing that they went there. never had irish accent or mention irish family so guessing english person joined the regiment when based here

what was your nans name .I can look for death index. If you got the certificate it would say who registered it if that helps

Ivy Report 7 Apr 2008 22:38

This is about the closest to Wisbech Horace Burley birth around 1900:

Name: Horace Leonard Burley
Year of Registration: 1899
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Sleaford (To 1933)
County: Lincolnshire
Volume: 7a
Page: 495

You'd need to get your nan's birth certificate to identity her parents - as Janice says, if you can find the death registration, it will give you her date of birth (if the informant had remembered it correctly)

Are there any numbers round the rim of the medal. i.e. his regimental number

magicadey

magicadey Report 7 Apr 2008 22:47
