Only have the surname. I as a very young child called him grandpa Butcher. To my father he was just Butcher, and my father wrote to him during ww2 so he wasd not dead before 1945/6 I should estimate that he was born in 1870's/ 80's. My grandmothers name was Ada Baglin and she lived in Rawmarsh nr Rotherham South Yorks, she was widowed in 1914 and never remarried. Can anyone help me find him so I can put some history to him and add him to my family tree as he was part of it. Elaine.

There's only one candidate right smack in the very same place in 1901:

Name: William Butcher
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Elizabeth
Where born: Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England

Occupation: Coal Miner Labourer in Pit
Address: 5 Roome's Buildgs (looks like Roome's)

Civil Parish: Rawmarsh
Ecclesiastical parish: Rawmarsh St Mary
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England

Registration district: Rotherham
Sub-registration district: Rawmarsh
ED, institution, or vessel: 10
Household schedule number: 137

Bertie Butcher 1
Elizabeth Butcher 27
William Butcher 28

Do the details sound familiar at all -- occupation, address?

Don't see an Ada Baglin in the 1901 -- was that her birth surname? Or --

Marriages Sep 1903
Baglin William Rotherham 9c 1065
Firth Arthur Rotherham 9c 1065
OUTRAM Ada Rotherham 9c 1065

?

Where was your grandmother living in 1901? Just to look for Butchers who might have been of her acquaintance in the vicinity.

Was Baglin your Grandmothers maiden or married name?

Grandmothers name prior to her marriage was Outram. However, Butcher did not live with her until long after she was widowed I think in the 30's 40's. Katherine B has cracked it though, as she has both Butcher and my grandma Many thanks to you all, Knew I could rely on the G R team if I wanted info you are a fantastic lot. Happy new year to you all. Elaine

You're kidding! -- you're sure that's your Butcher??

There's such a gap in time, it could have been some completely different Butcher who'd come to Rawmarsh by the 30s or 40s.

This must be your Ada in 1891:

Name: Ada Outram
Age: 11
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1880
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: George
Mother's Name: Martha A
Where born: Rawmarsh, Yorkshire, England

Address: 6 Holmes' Yard
Civil Parish: Rawmarsh
Ecclesiastical parish: Rawmarsh
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England

Registration district: Rotherham
Sub-registration district: Kimberworth
ED, institution, or vessel: 28

Ada Outram 11
Florence Outram 9
George Outram 42 - Coal Miner
Jonas Outram 18
Martha A Outram 43
Tom Outram 6

Given the distance in time, both Ada and Mr. Butcher were likely widowed by the time they, er, shared living quarters. ;)

I had a quick check here at GR for anyone with William Butcher or Bertie (who may not have been born in Gloucestershire) in trees, but saw none.

This is about the only match I could find for son Bertie:

Name: Albert Alfred W Butcher
Year of Registration: 1899
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Monmouth (1837-1939)
County: Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Monmouthshire
Volume: 11a
Page: 20

His birthplace in 1901 is given as Broadwell, which is in registration district Stow on the Wold, but there's no match for given name or surname there in 1899 or 1900. Wife Elizabeth's birthplace is given as Bream, which is in registration district Monmouth. So this could possibly be their marriage:

Marriages Dec 1897
** BUTCHER William Richard Monmouth 11a 34
Fullilove Joseph Henry Monmouth 11a 34
GWILLIAM Sarah Jane Monmouth 11a 34
** Harper Elizabeth Lucy A Monmouth 11a 34

So this could be the two of them in 1881:

Name: William R. Butcher
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873
Relation: Son
Father's Name: George
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Where born: East Dean, Gloucestershire, England

Name: Elizabeth Harper
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Thomas
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Where born: West Dean, Gloucestershire, England

In case you want to find more about him and possible living family.

I hope he's the right one!

Lovely piece of work Kath :) Cinderford is a strange place in the Forest of Dean, on the borders of Wales.

Well garsh, folks, finding that Mr. Butcher was hardly a feat of legerdemain. ;)

1901 census, search for Butcher in Rawmarsh -- oh look, there's one!

So Cinderford is a strange place, eh? Ha, I thought most places talked about hereabouts were. Took a peek at it at google maps (which I keep permanently open in a window so I can figure out where all the strange places talked about here are) on satellite view. Looked fairly normal. ;) Those plots of rows of uniform trees over to the left of it don't look a whole lot like "forest" I must say, though.

So ... maybe witches really were just middle-aged women with search engines ...

Hey Kathryn! You've done a great job and we witches must stick together. Funny you being one, my grandchildren all know me as the witch as I make sick animals better and have a (classic nose). The Butcher in Gloucestershire is the right one, it is realy strange because Ada's husband William's Family all came from Gloucestershire going back to the 1600's. Sorry i had to log off last night but my two dogs can tell the time and must go for last walkies at 10pm. I am going to see if I can find more about him, I am not sure whether he was just a lodger or more, I was too young to care he was just grandpa Butcher. Thank you all Elaine.
