EvieBeavie Report 6 Apr 2009 17:41

Well interestingly, Evelyn doesn't seem to have been born either!

Have you found a birth record for her? I don't see her in the GRO index before her marriage.

BatMansDaughter Report 6 Apr 2009 17:45

Hi Evie,

I can't see her birth or find her on census.... did find a locked tree, apparently she was born in Yorkshire??!!!!

Just a gut feeling Janice... I maybe wrong.

Hmm. A suspiciously similar pair in 1891 in Newington St Mary:

> Reuben Ashby 57
Eliza Ashby 55
Emily L Ashby 23
Helen B Ashby 19
> Eveline B Ashby 15
Eleanor J Piper 27

edit - no, dang:

Births Mar 1876
Ashby Eveline Beatrice Lambeth 1d 447

(I had thought it might be a case of a woman marrying under her birth surname but using her stepfather's given name when naming her father.)

Only problem, Evie, he's a cabinet maker, a far cry from a veterinary surgeon.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 6 Apr 2009 17:54

I'm feeling for you, because I have a grx2 grandfather Reuben I can't place either. ;)

In the early records he's variously Rubin, Ruben and so on, so remember to keep that in mind when searching.

... FreeBMD has no record of any kind for given names "Reuben Cedric" ...

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 6 Apr 2009 17:57

I edited them out after, Margaret. ;)

But what, you haven't seen people lie about their father's occupation on marriage certs, expecially post mortem?!

My grx3 grandfather the ag lab became "gentleman" on his son's second marriage. That son was a mining agent of some sort, and on his son's marriage certificate he was a cook!

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 6 Apr 2009 18:08

This birth also goes with the couple Dee identified:

Births Dec 1912
Hammond Frances A Cater Pancras 1b 191

Anne, what else can you tell us about your Evelyn?
(Oops -- is Evelyn your person, for starters??)

Did she marry Hammond?

On the spelling thing, also note that it's more likely she was born Eveline (or Evelina) and changed it to a trendier spelling when she grew up / married.

Thanks for your help everyone! Evelyn Beryle Stannus Cater appears on her marriage certificate as 25 years old in April1898 which would make her born C1873 and yes she did become a Hammond. She was supposedly the daughter of Reuben Cater.I don't think that she could be Evelyn Beatrice Ashby as the wrong second name and wrong age.Evelyn was definitely born in Hull Yorkshire as her husbands name is correct and my grandfather had a brother called Arthur.

Well, I think she altered her given names when she married, for starters.

That's not uncommon. My grandmother Lily became Lilian when she married in 1918; my grandfather thought Lily was common.

We had a puzzle here recently that was solved when I found the Kathleen Marion who had married in the early 1900s being born as Kate Mary.

There was a big shift in names in the late 1800s and first part of the 1900s, for both girls and boys. I think people who found themselves entering the new century with old-century names sometimes took matters in their own hands once they got a chance.

Evelyn was a newfangled spelling of the name that was Eveline up to the late 1800s -- although there were 50 or so Evelyns born in Yorkshire 1871-1874.

Beryl was barely known as a name before the late 1800s. There were two Beryls registered in Yorkshire 1870-1880, e.g.

So I'd maybe not rule out variations on the given names theme.

(But yes, I had ruled out the Evelyn Beatrice I was looking at because she was found to have independent existence.)

Stannus. Any idea where that comes from?

I would think maybe it was her original surname, and Cater was her stepfather. But there's no Stannus birth to match ...

Anne Wood

Anne Wood Report 7 Apr 2009 18:06

I wondered if Stannus might have been her original surname but like you I could not find anything that remotely matched. Idon't know what to try next.

Anne

I'm poking around at a family of Stannus-s in Yorkshire in 1851-71.

Mother Jane, born 1803 Belfast, died 1875; father Bartholomew, born 1803 Ireland. They appear in censuses variously as Stanners, Stannas, Staunus. And they have daughters.

There are names like Ephraim in the clan. Reuben would fit right in. ;)

Not having much luck tracking them past 1861 though.

It wasn't uncommon for a father's name on a marriage certificate to be an amalgam of different people -- a real father's given name, a stepfather's surname, vice versa, a maternal grandfather's name, an occupation from one, a name from another ...

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 7 Apr 2009 18:18

Search the IGI for surname Stannus, no other criteria.

The results are almost entirely Irish.

A GR member named Shelly has that whole passel of Stannus-s in her tree here.

Just search for surname Stannus born 1850 +/- 50 years. The ones born in the 1830s and 40s with no places of birth shown are the ones in Ecclesall Bierlow in the censuses. Hugh Hutton Stannus 1840 ends up in London as an "Architect Painter Sculptor & Ornamentist" in 1881.

She might be able to tell you something about the Stannus name in Yorkshire.

Meanwhile -- your Evelyn's groom is a general labourer in 1901, but her father was a veterinary surgeon. ? There's just a bit of dissonance there. It surely would be interesting to know what Evelyn's childhood circumstances were.
