IN THE VAGUE HOPE YOU MAY BE ABLE TO HELP ME.
Abandoned in Leeds at pre-school age with her younger brother (Charles Robert Clark born 1901), my maternal grandmother Violet Clark had no record of her parents. She and her brother were raised with the Furness family in the Woodhouse area of Leeds until sent to work aged 13. Violet died on 6 Feb 1979 wondering why she had been left by her parents; where did they go; why go without their children.
I believe I have searched all relevant records, and even Anthony Adolf has been unable to suggest anything further. I had hoped to solve this mystery for my own mother - any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Sue

On a bit of a limb here...can't find a Violet Clarke in 1901...but as her middle name (if that's the right birth) may be Scott....considering this????

I would certainly get those birth certificates.

My hunch would be that Violet's parents weren't married. The surname as a middle name, Scott, is commonly an indication of that -- it would be the surname of the father. (My great-aunt, born c1890 before her mother married my gr-grfather, has her father's surname as a middle name, for instance.)

In that case the father's name would most likely not be entered on the birth certificate, but at least the mother's name would be known and you could try to trace her.

That's exactly the one I was looking at as I typed the above post, Rose!

Same hunch? ;)

Kate Scott says she's married, but.

edit - the couple they're visiting, I think:

well I'd certainly risk £14 on those birth certs in the hope that they have same mother :)

just out of interest the other name on that 1911 Joshua Peel down as 'brother' might be worth looking into ? whose brother? could he be the childrens father ??

Please excuse us having a little 'aside' here on your thread Sue but what GR change has caused you to have to do that Rose? - I haven't had that problem??

Problem is -- I don't think those Bowers *are* in the Furness household in 1911.

Artbeat posted the 1911 details and they aren't there.

And a search for Bower living with Furness, etc., doesn't turn them up.

Can choccy tell us how that 1911 list was compiled?

(Dea -- GR has reduced the font size one level. To get it back to where you had it, if you want to, hold down the control key and press the + key.)

edit - Artbeat beat me to it on the Bowers.

Odd, odd.
