William Collins, my Great Grandfather is proving difficult to find. On my Grandmother's (Amy Ellen Emily) Birth Certificate he is recorded as a steward on HMS Donegal. My search of naval records has failed to find him. At that time they are at Birkenhead. I don't have a birth date for him. The Collins name is fairly common and so it has proved difficult to find him. He is off the scene by 1881, his wife Frances nee Wallace has remarried a Bennett and living in Portsmouth. Amy's Brother, Walter, was born about 1870 but my search through the BMD records so far has been inconclusive. I was rather surprised to learn that the last Confederate ship to surrender after the American Civil War, surrendered to HMS Donegal in Liverpool when William was supposed to be on the ship. Why surrender to a British Ship? I would appreciate any information that others may have come across. Peter Hart
