I'm trying to find my Grandmother, Gladys Nellie Collins, born around 1908. She did not marry my Grandfather, Richard Garland, but they lived together in South London (around Lee and Bromley). She was admitted to Bexley asylum in 1939 and transferred to Oakwood Hospital (Barming Heath) in 1940 where she died in 1959.
Without a marriage certificate or census I'm struggling to find a match to the very long list of possible birth records.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Barbara,
The birth record you found is at the top of my list of possibles because it is the best match. There is also a Nellie Gladys Collins b1907 Battle and a very long list of Gladys and Nellie Collins. So much depends on how her name was recorded at birth.
I'm going to order the certificate anyway, however I cannot see a way of confirming that any particular Collins certificate is that of my grandmother. I think I need a record which links Gladys with Richard or her stay in hospital with her parent's names. Any ideas would be welcomed.
Thank you for your time and interest,
Paul Garland

I now have copies of the birth certificates for Gladys Nellie Collins b1906 Aston and Nellie Gladys Collins b1907 Bexhill, but I'm really no further forward.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to trace un-married grandmothers born after the 1901 census? Maybe I'll just have to wait until the 1931 census is available!
