Mary Coppoth married John Ector Dec 1844 Manchester (ref 20 697) - this much I know thanks to Ann of Green Gables!

However, I've been looking all day for the said Mary - can't find a single trace before the marriage. I have the family from the 1851 census right through to her death in 1876, and then John through to his death in 1887.

According to all the censuses Mary was born in Dukinfield, Lancashire. Can anyone find her, or do yo think it's a mistranscription?

Incidentally - discovered that there are lots of Lynnes on these boards so have changed my name to Merlynne.

Hope that hasn't caused confusion for anyone!!!

Merlynne

Merlynne Report 16 Apr 2009 00:34

Duhhh - sorry! According to the censuses she was born about 1816. I've checked through IGI, ANcestry etc, and can't come up with anything.

Coppock looks interesting?

Merlynne Report 16 Apr 2009 00:45

Hi Lindsey

Think I'm going to send for marriage cert and see what it says on there. Hopefully, it will have John Ector born in Dublin, and a clue as to Mary's surname proper!

I agree, the Coppocks look interesting. Thought I'd have it easy, such an unusual surname - although I have to say, when I started all this, I thought I'd have a fairly easy time - lots of unusual surnames!! However - strangely, it has been a lot harder to find the quirky ones, and much easier to find all the Hughes and Berry families!

Thanks

Lynne

Good idea and then put us all out of our misery when you get it ! The only likely is born 1815 0n the igi ?

That is the only COPPOTH entry in the entire GRO index. No birth, no marriage, no death apart from that marriage.

I make it a mistranscription of COPPOCK somewhere along the way.

Merlynne Report 16 Apr 2009 01:20

Evie - the date of 1816 comes from 1861 census - Mary is shown as being 45.

Ref: RG9/1928/12/17

Got her death as well:

Wolstanton Dec 1876 6b 81 aged 58

WHich again makes it about 1816ish.

As for the lithp.....

For ages, my family reckoned my Sarah Ector was really Sarah Hector, but spoke with a Manchester accent - so when asked her name, she probably said Surur 'Ector...... LOL

Going to bed now ladies - got to teach in the morning!!!!

UPDATE:

Just got the marriage cert for John Ector and Mary, and also birth cert for one of their childen - Sarah Ector.

The marriage cert:

15 October 1844 St Mary's Church Manchester

John Ector full age Joiner Father James Ector Butcher
Mary Coppoth full age Father John Coppoth Gardener

BUT

on the birth cert:

17/2/1847 Salford

Sarah Father: John HECTOR Mother: Mary Hector formerly COPPOCK

So now I'm looking for her in the 1841 -sorry EvieBeavie, doesn't look like the one you found for me is the right one - wrong father's name. I'll carry on looking!

Hi Dee

Just looked for the John/Charlotte parentage - there is one, but it's in Mollington, which is near Chester. As far as I can remember (long time since I lived oop north) Dukinfield is more over towards the west of Manchester.

On the censuses, Mary definitely says Dukinfield - so I reckon the John and Phoebe marriage is probably the best bet.

Incidentally, love the spelling of PHEBE - I also have another on a different branch - PHEOBE. And I think you are right about the Ag Lab - maybe he'd been cutting flowers for the wedding that morning, so she made him a gardener (LOL)!!

Christening Place: Capesthorne, Cheshire, England
Mother's Name: Sarah Coppock

Merlynne Report 23 Apr 2009 16:14

Hi Lindsey

"My" Phebe was only a Coppock by marriage - this could be a relation of some sort, maybe niece to John or something.

Just had a quick look in the 1841 census - you wouldn't believe how many people have the surname Coppock in Lancashire and Cheshire!!

Also looks like a lot of them were Quaker families (I googled) and emigrated to America. As mine were married in St Mary's Parish Church, Manchester, I doubt if they were Quakers.

Need to buy a bigger spade - for all my digging!
