Hi, I'm trying to find out some info about Thomas and his son Harry. Thomas was a butcher, born in egerton, kent. Harry was born in Sutton Valence kent, his mother was Amelia Ashdown, she died after giving birth to Harry's sister Alice in 1880.
I know that Harry and Alice were with their grandparents on the 1891 census, and what happened to Alice, her marriage etc, but I don't know anything else about Harry.
A story in the family says that Thomas marries for a second time and then dies and the children are thrown out by their stepmother, this could be why they are with the grandparents, but I can't find a second marriage for him or a death. My dad's cousin says she was told that Thomas married his housekeeper, but I doubt this very much as according to the 1881 census, his housekeeper was his sister Ellen!

Can anyone help with what Harry did next and what exactly happened to Thomas please?

Thank you in advance,
Jen.

Jean Report 29 Dec 2007 17:02

Hi Jen

On the 1901 census, a 23 year old Harry Day, born Sutton Valence, is a boarder, with the Nicholls family, at 1 Crescent Cottages, St Mary's Newington in London. His occupation is given as Store Clerk. He is unmarried.........

As for his father Thomas G Day (as given on the 1881 census )

I am sure this is his death registration...

Thomas George Day / age 30 / March qtr 1888 / Hollingbourne / volume 2a page 498

His birth registration

Thomas George Day / December qtr 1858 / Maidstone / volume 2a page 422

Hope this helps a little

Regards

Jean

many thanks for that, it has given me something to work on. It now seems possible that the family story is true, especially if it turns out that Maria was Thomas's housekeeper before they married.
Thank you.
