Hi.
Is there anyone who would know, or can advise me on how I can find the birth date and any other details (father mother etc) for the above lady who is my gt. Grandmother.
I have looked in all of the records that I have access to on the internet (Ancestry, IGI etc) but without any luck.
I have her marriage cert (15 Oct 1855) to James Hodges which shows her father as Charles Durant a brewer (deceased) all of the subsequent census records that I have traced show her place of birth as Bow, Middlesex.

I would be extreemly grateful if someone has any ideas on how I can get back further.

Many thanks
Brian

Hmmm.

How about if her mother had remarried, and Emily appeared in the 41 and 51 censuses under her stepfather's surname?

Durant seems to be very much a Norfolk name.

So just to kick off this theory, there are a few things about this 1851 household that are interesting:

Name: Emily Baker
Age: 15
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1836
Relation: Daughter
Mother's Name: Maria
Gender: Female
Where born: Bow, Middlesex, England

Name: Maria Baker - widow
Age: 37
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Thorpe, Norfolk, England

Name: Mary Rant - unmarried
Age: 65
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1786
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Norwich, Norfolk, England

Civil Parish: Stratford Le Bow
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England

Registration district: Poplar
Sub-registration district: Bow
ED, institution, or vessel: 1n
Household schedule number: 57

Emily Baker 15
Henry Baker 5
Julia Baker 2
Maria Baker 37
Ann Pearson 23
Mary Rant 65

The Emily has the right date and place of birth. The mother is from Norfolk. The housekeeper is called Rant -- hmm, a mistake for Durant?

There's a big gap between Emily and the other children. A remarriage, and then the death of the second husband? All between censuses, unfortunately.

Of course I can't find a Maria Durant marriage to match. ;)

And of course Ancestry has chosen this moment to crap out and I can't do any more searching. So I'll have to leave it at the theoretical stage for a bit.

Thanks for this but it dose not seem to tie in, Elizabeth children are as follows:-
Elizabeth b 1855, Eliza b 1858, Ellen b 1859/60, Amelia b 1863, Louisa b 1865 and Mary b. 29 Sept 1869 (I have berth cert for Mary and it shows mother as Elizabeth HODGES formerly DURANT They lived at this time at 12 Oxford Street Battersea.

Brian

Okay, now if I can just figure out why in blazes i was searching for *Emily* and not *Elizabeth* ...

Of course it doesn't tie in. ;)

I think I was searching by various criteria and somehow saw something that stuck "Emily" in my head. Much time wasted! I'm still waiting for the morning coffee delivery, that's it.

And Ancestry is still being a pig, but I promise to keep trying.

Given how Elizabeth named her children, might one suspect that her mother was Elizabeth?

An Elizabeth Durant married in 1845.

Marriages Jun 1845
Canty Peter Whitechapel 2 533
Dowsett Caroline Whitechapel 2
Driscoll Mary Ann Whitechapel 2
Durant Elizabeth Whitechapel 2 533
Perkins William Whitechapel 2 533
Shephard Elizabeth Ann Douglass Whitechapel 2 533
Turner John Whitechapel 2 533
Wood John Whitechapel 2 533

That's not helping much. (Although in trying to track her down in the subsequent census, I did find a John and Elizabeth Wood with son Shaft. One more for the collection.)

Ah, coffee has arrived.

There are two Durrant children in institutions in 1841:

Charles Durrant abt 1829 Christchurch Newgate Street Middlesex
- in Christ's Hospital, scholar, not born in county

Robt H Durrant abt 1830 Christchurch Newgate Street Middlesex
- in Christ's Hospital, scholar, not born in county

and also:

Fanny Durrant abt 1821 St Sepulchre Without Newgate Middlesex
- female servant in household of warehouseman, apparently worker in business

Agula Durrant abt 1819 St Pancras Middlesex

-- it's Aquila, and he is married (to Elizabeth, probably Elizabeth Raven, Q3 1841, Marylebone presumably late March; the marriage record says Durant (one "r"). I mention him mainly to illustrate the switchable spelling.

The name of the first one is consistent with being the eldest son of a (deceased) Charles.

Could the two boys, at least, be older siblings of Elizabeth, dispersed when the parents died?

Now here's quite an interesting one:

Name: Eliza Durrant
Age: 9
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1832
Gender: Female

Civil Parish: Bethnal Green
Hundred: Ossulstone (Tower Division)
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England

Registration district: Bethnal Green
Sub-registration district: Hackney Road

Susannah Cope 35
Thomas William Cope 36
Eliza Durrant 9

Mr. Cope is "Foreman in Stout Stores". Your Charles Durrant was a brewer.

Eliza's age is a little off ...

Oh well. Susannah was Susannah Jane Sullivan, married Cope Q2 1840.

That does indicate, however, that Eliza Durrant was not a child of that marriage. Oh, and there's a single line between the Copes and Eliza Durrant on the census page -- not their child. It's *possible* that the name says "Elizh", but it's probably Eliza. Her not being their child, though, it wouldn't be surprising that they didn't give her age and name accurately.

Here are the Copes in 1851:

Name: Susan Cope
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1811
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: Thos Wm
Gender: Female
Where born: Leyton, Essex, England

Name: Maria Jane Cope
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1843
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Thos Wm
Mother's Name: Susan
Gender: Female
Where born: Bow, Middlesex, England <<

Civil Parish: Hackney
Ecclesiastical parish: Homerton
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England

Registration district: Hackney
Sub-registration district: Hackney
ED, institution, or vessel: 18b
Household schedule number: 249

Maria Jane Cope 8
Susan Cope 40
Thos Wm Cope 36 - Dairyman

Don't really see a close match for Maria Jane's birth in the GRO index.

I'd say these people look interesting ...
