I am a direct decendent of John Eales (b.28th March 1799 in Ashburton Devon) who emigrated to Australia in 1823 with a letter of introduction to the governor of New South Wales. He was granted 2100 acres of land near Morpeh and became one of the first settlers on the Hunter River. Known as 'One- man Settler' he worked to establish his prperty 'Berry Park'. He established a number of different methds of raising money, including coal mining, a steamship company and of coursr, farming and became extremely successful, and by the early 1850's owned 16000 acres of land. He built his mansion, Duckenfield, where he died in April 1871, one of the wealthiest men in New South Wales. Does any of this sound familiar? Anthony (Tony) John Eales
