Trying to find Empson

The Cat's Whiskers

The Cat's Whiskers Report 8 Aug 2007 17:45

Is anyone 'missing' a JOHN Empson? My anctress was Elizabeth Empson, b.1838-40 at Pleasley Hill, near Pleasley, Mansfield, Notts. She married widower John Mellors in 1867 and someone has listed her surname as Enson, daughter of John Emson, but her children's birth certificates list Empson. Her parents were 'Sarah', who was born about 1803 and lists Blidworth on the censuses (she died in 1881 in Mansfield) and John Empson - unfortunately he died when Elizabeth was a baby and before the crucial 1841 census! I have found only 3 older children from the 1841 census - Mary (abt 1820), William, (abt 1825) and Sarah (abt 1832) who married a Henry Cutts from Harthill, Derbys. Empson is not a frequently encountered name, though it is often confused - on only the 1881 census shortly before she dies was Sarah recorded as Empson - other censuses listed her and children as Hempshall, Henson, and so on. If anyone has a John Empson on their tree who married a Sarah and then 'disappeared' I would be interested.
