Dorothy -- and Fay too -- for births in this era, the GRO rather than the IGI is where to look. Registration was compulsory and so at least theoretically universal (although my gr-grparents don't seem to have bothered registering their kid's birth in 1884), while the IGI is spotty and incomplete and dependent on baptism.

Searching for

surname: fletcher
given name: amy
Sep quarter 1896 to Dec quarter 1896

(a birth in September could have been registered in September or October)

there are two -- I'll reproduce them, but you still need to do the search yourself and check the images to verify that the info as transcribed is correct, Dorothy (vol and page numbers):

Births Dec 1896
Fletcher Amy Liverpool 8b 87
Fletcher Amy Rochdale 8e 49

Also Dorothy -- one post per request and all that -- you asked the same question in someone else's thread, which means that several people have now done the same work to find your answer. And in fact you could have found it yourself at FreeBMD all along!

One of us in your previous thread should have given you clear directions to FreeBMD, but you slipped through the cracks. (I'm a firm believer in teaching people to fish for their own ancestors!) If you go to the URL in my previous post, and click on the red "search" and just start playing with the functions, you'll soon be an old hand.

You can search for births by mother's surname after mid-1911 only. Before that, you can search only by surname and/or given name and/or location or county.

But for marriages you can mix things up -- you can search for a Smith who married a Mary, for instance, and you will find pages on which there are a Smith and a Mary, who may or may not have married each other. If you know your Smith was John and the marriage was in Lancashire, you can start narrowing down.

FreeBMD is free, fast and fairly reliable. If you run into problems like having only three names instead of four on a marriage list, the result of a mistranscription somewhere, you can always call for help.
