Irene

Thank you for your reply - I would never have thought of that solution.

It could be how Mary explained away her first marriage to her new family knowing that it would be most unlikely that any of them would enquire further - she kept them far too busy I was told!

Thank you all for taking the time to do the research which I shall now cut and paste for my friend so that she can decide what to do next............Mavis

I asked as it has been suggested by a experienced researcher that the 7 years wait to obtain a death cert may have been because John Wakefield disappeared without a trace - and after 7 seven years it was possible -apparently - to have a person declared "dead" to permit a remarriage of spouse
It is alway possible that he took at least one of the children with him - and moved abroad

Might be an idea to get the death cert and see what is actually said

Irene,

I haven't asked, but I think it most unlikely. My friend was totally unaware of her mother's first marriage until in her 20's when she needed her birth certificate (to obtain a job with the Post Office) showing a name that didn't agree with what she had been told earlier.
I had no luck with fmp yesterday looking for death or marriage for John B.P. Perhaps I should have left out the B.P as he may have decided not to use them!.......Mavis

Mavis Report 16 Aug 2010 21:19

Sorry, couldn't reply sooner - no signal last night.

The information re John Wakefield is only what my friend had from her mother who was a very secretive person (most unlike her admission on the 1911 census). I can only assume that the body was not recovered at the time, but I will ask her tomorrow. It was really the children she was interested in as they would have been her half brothers and sadly she is the last in her line so has no one with whom she can discuss it.
Thank you again Irene and Anne for all your help.
I shall now look for a death or a marriage for John B.P., his being the most unusual name..........Mavis

Why could they not issue a death cert if he drowned - was his body never found - have you thought to look in the local newspapers for the time period

Mavis you said this earlier.

Thank you Maureen, I see what you mean. They didn't actually marry until 1915 as Mary had to wait 7 years I believe until a death cert. could be issued. Not sure what her daughter will make of it!!! Very much appreciated.
Kind regards, Mavis

You have to wait 7 yrs for a death cert if you dont know what happened to a spouse,as in they did a runner and you want to remarry by having them declared dead?

Thank you FBG and brummiejan. Sorry FBG, I got it wrong again - will just add next time.

John Wakefield(snr) drowned (date not known) and I wondered if perhaps grandparents or other relatives had taken them in as they are not with their mother in 1911 as shown earlier in this thread. Perhaps the younger John didn't survive, but I haven't checked this.

Must leave now and I really appreciate all your work...........Mavis

Now you confused me Jan.

That John is born a different time and where did Leslie come into it?

And I thought Mary was shacked up with the Frederick Rayfield bloke on 1911?

Sorry about the confusion, folks. When I logged on,it wouldn't go to "trying to find" and ended up with "community" which I cannot now replicate!! something odd I think (maybe me?).........Mavis
