I just obtained a copy of my fathers birth certificate - Edward Funnell born 3rd April 1917 Lewes. Mother was Ada Funnell of 12 South Street Lewes domestic/cook. No entries under fathers details. My father died at the age of 50 and the only memories I have is that he said his father died in WW1 (possible but probable cover) and his mum died when he was very young so he was brought up in a local orphange until aged 14 when he joined army as a junior bandsman.
Seem to be lots of Funnell's around Lewes. Probably would never be able to trace my fathers father but would be interested in knowing what sort of life Ada had and why dad was placed into the orphanage plus finding out more details of the orphanage which would probably have been a type of workhouse in those days
