My maternal grandfather was Walter Gittins b 22/03/1869 to George and Fanny (nee Fenner ) Gittins I have info on the 1871 census Derident, Aston district for George head 49 born Stratford on Avon Fanny wife 39 born Liverpool Thomas 10 Elizabeth 8 and Walter 2 - all born B/ham - I can not find any marriage or any other info on George b1822 or Fanny - b1832

Walter Gittins married Elizabeth Lonthorne b1865 on 29/04/1895 and on the cert George's profession is a hatter

I found a Walter Gittins age 12 on the 1881 census as an inmate of the Birmingham Industrial school (don't know if this was similar to the workhouse?) and wondered if his parents had died

George and Fanny with son Thomas age 7 mo are visitors in Birmingham in 1861 (George a hatter). Fanny agrees she is born in Liverpool, but George states that he is born in Birmingham.

George may therefore have remarried - there is a George Gittins (who states that he was born in Birmingham) age 70 in 1891 in Birmingham, a hatter married to Caroline.

Well done Ivy - Did you find the 1861 record on Ancestry? - I must be getting too old for this! - Just found them listed as Gittings

Hi Kay,

You're never too old - it's just pot luck with Ancestry.

I happened to use George Gitt* between 1820 and 1824, and it restricted it quite well - but haven't seen him in 1881, if that is him in 1891.

All the best

Hi Ivy

I looked for George working as a hatter in 1881 and couldn't find him!!

Best Wishes Kay

my Gittins moved to Scotland in 1901 so I do not know if there would be a connection but it might be worth a try thanks Anne
