Yorkshire Goslings

Peter Report 15 Dec 2007 16:05

I am interested in anyone who has knowledge of the Goslings of Gawthorpe, near Ossett, in the 1850s. My Great Grandfather was George Gosling and he left Gawthorpe to live in London, where he married Eliza Ferguson, between 1850 and 1870. Then he returned to Gawthorpe with his family to farm. A) why did he leave and B)where did the farm come from?

I have George's family bible and that set me off on the hunt.

Hi Peter.
I read your request for help with your Gosling family.

This looks like the marriage..
George Gosling...
Eliza Ferguson..
June q 1850..
Registered at Whitechapel..
Volume: 2..
Page: 636..

This looks like George before he went to London.

1841 Census: Gosling..
John.. c1771..
Yorkshire...

Joseph... c1806..
Yorkshire...

GEORGE.. C1827..
Yorkshire...

Percival Jessop.. c1806..
???

Mary Jessop... c1801..
Yorkshire...
Address: Gawthorpe, Dewsbury..
John Gosling is a Cordwainer and George Gosling is a Machine ???.
----------------------
Same family in 1851 Census..
Percival Jessop... head..
c1811.. Gawthorpe...

Mary Jessop... wife.. c1800..
Leeds...

??? Jessop.. son.. c1846..
Gawthorpe...

Joseph Gosling.. brother in law..
c1804.. Leeds..
Address: Gawthorpe, Yorkshire..
Percival is a Hand Loom Weaver and Joseph is a butcher..

I was thinking perhaps George's father could have been a farmer or perhaps another member of his family but this does not seem to be the case. None of their occupations have anything to do with farming.
It does seem to be a mystery where the farm came from..

Regards.
Alyson

Hi Peter,

Do you perhaps have any more info on Eliza Ferguson ie parents, DOB etc?

Thanks
