Fathers will be on the marriage cert.

Once you find the couple's ages ( again from marriage certificate)
you'll be able to look for them on the census and ultimately find their birth certififcates on freebmd.

There is only the banns on the indexes and not hte actual marriage but it does say that it was certified on the 22 April which is the next date after the third reading of the banns.

Yes Mike but I think Gardener wanted us to look at the London Marriages and only the banns are on there.

These indexes only go up to 1901 so I can't see any born later than 1906.

Have you got them on the 1911 census?

I have no credit left to look them up on there, sorry.

Gardener47 Report 2 Apr 2011 17:35

I am posting again on this thread as I don't want to make another thread and waste a thread when I already have a perfectly good one on the Holloway family.
Basically, the other day my mother said to me that she never went to her father, Wilson James Holloway's funeral and her mother had to walk to it because she had 'fallen out with the family', this is something new to us.. We were discussing it with other family members and it is possible that he split up (or even divorced) his wife, Annie before he died in 1937. Are there any online records for divorces in the late 1920's and 1930's?
It is also possible he went abroad as he was a steward on a boat. Could somebody please clear up whether he is on any passenger lists in the 1930s or early 1940s. (He was born in 1901 in Greenwich.)
I know this is a very personal issue but I would like to know whether he indeed died when my mother was a child.
Many Thanks,
Gardener47

Can I just clarify - is it the same person who died in 1937 that you want us to check passenger lists for in the early 40's? (Sorry if I'm having a blonde moment!)

PS - thanks for sticking to one thread!

There is this death on FreeBMD:

Deaths Jun 1937
Holloway James W 35 Bermondsey 1d 103

Gardener47 Report 3 Apr 2011 12:28

I dont know about that death as I think a totally different person called James W Holloway was born about the same time as Wilson and thats his death that you posted, as far as I know thy are not related.

Actually I dont know if he died. He may have just divorced his wife and moved away. But there are no deaths fo him in the UK (I think). That is why I asked for a passenger list search because I would just like to clear up whether he ever went on a ship because apparently he was a steward.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 3 Apr 2011 12:31

Did he always go by his first name of Wilson, or did he ever use James?

I'm not finding anything on the former, but may be the latter.

Where did you originally get the idea he may have died in 1937? (I'm just trying to piece things together)

Gardener47

Gardener47 Report 3 Apr 2011 12:33

Apparently his mother insisted he was called James Holloway. This may or may not be true.
Also as Wilson is such an uncommon name my mother said to search William James so he may be known as that?

My mother mentioned that he died in 1937 in their house. He died of Tuberculosis (TB) apparently.

So do you have reason to doubt the accuracy of your mother's information?
